Summer Build 2012

let know if you need some more 'boo

bought a whole stack of laminated panels from Brian at Greenlight years ago that he was using as stringer material and selling for fins

i thought i could bend them into perimeters but quickly reliazed that wasn’t gonna happen.

was that blue dow that made the rails on the other board.

did ken make all that to your specs?

i think i owe that fin maniac ben a bento of goodies too.

too bad air mail postage and customs is so fn expensive to AUS

Hi Bernie,

In case you haven’t heard Ken is no longer doing Segway.  He sold it to someone else.  I hope Ken, if you’re out there, you’re doing well.  sounded a bit stressed with working weekends at a second job.

I got the Xps railed blank from “Surfding”  aka AMERICAN SURF INDUSTRIES-  Untitled Document  He also cut the blank from m AKU file.  If you’ll notice his build thread he’s using an identical blank.

I  still have lots of bamboo.  I got a panel 3’ x 5’ for $40.

E bu, I neva send Ben da box yet. Jus give me whateva else you like send. I still have to fill out the customs papers.

Should get there before Xmas.

again i have a box of these that have been sitting around for half a decade.

Ben we’ll get some out.

I used some excess G-10 for the bases.

lillibel03 you have made some very good boards in the past however I think this one is the best one so far!

Kind regards,

surfding

Please keep us posted on how these boards hold up over time. Very nice job on both of them.

Thanks everyone.  Senor, give us a ring.  S + I are in Italy right now. S is miserable.  It's hot and humid and she's suffering some kind of heat rash, not having fun at all.  I, on the other hand, have been doing what I love to do- surf and make surfboards.

Before I get to pics, to answer questions- the fins are 2 layers of 4 oz s glass on each side.  In the past I have made the tabs too thick and then I had to do a whole other step- grinding down and then adding glass again.  This time I erred on the side of thin.  So they fit easily in the boxes, but when I tightened them they lost cant.  It was an easy fix- I just added a little strip of wood on the bottom of the tab, railside.  Now cant is all good.

I always put 1/8" carbon rod in the FCS tabs.  I'm 50/50 as far as drilling them straight.  As you can see in the earlier photo that one went in crooked.  I just added another patch on glass over it. The other one went straight and was not visible.

So here's the twinzer.  I'm kind of excited about this one- more of a groveler, perfect for now, I hope.  6-0 x 20-1/4 x 2-3/8.  I should mention that both boards without fins came in just under 6 pounds.  Not super light, but light enough.

That is bloody insane mate, i reckon that'll fly!!!

Wow!  Your board is insane, Jeff.  Hope  you’re bringing it to Plaskett this year.  Mike

Yeah, really nice job lillibel!!

I reckon the go-pro might cause a bit of drag though if you mount it on the bottom of the board like that:)

FIVE STARS !!!!!!!

Great stuff Jeff.....

Thanks guys.

I took the twinzer out yesterday.  I almost didn’t go out the waves looked so bad. You know how you don’t want to prejudice your feelings about a new board by having a bad session in crummy waves?  Then my friend Andy shows up as I 'm checking it (he’s the one who helped me with the bagging).  He’s pointing out rideable waves and so I decided to head out.

I was almost nervous.  What if it’s a dog afger all that work?  But, hey, feels good under the arm.  Through the shore break…hmmm…paddles well, volume feels about right…first wave…catches waves easy…maybe as easy as my 6-10 bonzer…and what do you know?  Like all the reviews I’ve read about them it immediately gets up to speed and is skating along. The rest of the session is all smiles as I discover the board is fast and loose.  What a combo! Love it!  And no deck denting after the first session.

Only slight negative, the pendo pad felt a little slippery at times. I remembered that the other pendo board I rode for 3 sessions was in the winter and I was probably wearing booties. At other times, once the foot settled in, it had that cushy feel.

Now it’s going to be hard to put down the twinzer to try the new thruster…

ps oh and Andy kind of raised his eyebrows at how sharp the fins are.  I would soften the edges but there is not much glass on the leading edge. The trailing edge I can and will soften, since I think the risk is mostly having a slightly larger fin, a little further back, sticking out, ready to catch unaware feet…

I would definately take the edge off the fins, I put a new set of Rawson fins on my quad, paddled out, and before I even caught a wave, I took a filet the size of a silver dollar off the inside of my foot. Two friggin weeks out of the water to heal. Lesson learned, now every fin gets the knife edge sanded down for safety.

..."IF" you DO take that beauty to the sways gathering , lillibel,  could you  please let me know in advance ?

.... and you can have a glo in the dark 'nubstar' for the back fin ...

so then , while all the "happy campers"  are drinking / sleeping [?]  , you can light up the night surf sessions ...is the full moon due one night while you're there ??

"Oneula " , it looks like you have more fins than ME , from those shots ?

[.....gaaads  man !!  so, WHO is really the "fin maniac" , NOW , eh , matey ? haha ]

are they 'wili wili' wood ?  balsa ?  "other" ?

They certainly look "blooming noice !" , mate , WHATEVER wood they are ...

now , I'll just need to one day get me some resin and cloth .....and then the " plaskett creek boys" can ALL be finned out , eh ?

if we lived in cali , it would be worth it , maybe ?  ...... [ just to supply "souvenirs",  eh ?]

" from hawaii [and oz] , with love !"

  [...well ..."S T O K E !! "  at least  anyway , hey ?!]

  cheers !

  ben

.....I will do a count one day / ? week ?!  ...just so I have a bit of an idea how many fins I really DO have lying around here .......

Well, I’ve tested both boards.  I only rode the thruster once.  It wasn’t bad but the twinzer…wow.  Instant speed and a lot of speed.  I keep thinking “What have I been doing all these years?  This is what a fast board feels like.”  The one weak spot I’ve found is that it gets really drifty on floaters, so I’m going to make some trailers and see what that does.  Here are some outlines I cut out.  They’re pretty small.  Any suggestions would be valuable…

You’re twinzer review has me stoked and changed the direction that I’m going with my current board.

Right on Llilibel! Stoked for you!

BTW, what are your fin placement #'s?

Bloody hell i love looking at that board!!. Sounds awesome mate. As for the trailer, i reckon make them all and try them all ( beat you ben! ). I used to use a very small keel, maybe 1 1/2'' long x 1'' high in my twin keel. I only liked it in hollow fast waves though, and i felt it slightly "dumbed" down the frontside loosy goosy feeling, so only used it if i knew i'd be surfing mostly backhand waves. It was very helpful on backhand waves for giving a little bit more, i dunno, "security". Just felt more confident pushing the bottom turn hard backhand. That was a while ago though, and im fine with keels on backhand now. Your board is obviously a much more high performance board than a keel, so i think any of those little trailers will help with a little centre line feel. I hope i make sense!!

Hahaha! =D …

I say the same, give them all a try.

Jeff what is the distance from the tip of the tail to the screw on the front box and the front screw on the back box?

Also, I told Bernie I like use the bamboo for a stringer, so if he only has one left, I may take it.

Hi Jeff!

You could/should consider adding another FCS plug in front of the vane. Spreading the fins will remove that feel on the floater you had. Plus, you can cant that fin more than the one that is in now.

Very stoked for the new best board ever!

Hi Jeff....There's alot of Ben Shipman inspired concepts in this thread...you guys would have made great boards together....Ben and I did a 6'4" Twinzer fish type of board with glass on wood fins and a channel bottom like you did....Red and black paint with poly resin and the whole bottom crystalized big time.......I never got to ride the board.....

Ben was a big fan of the Bonzer stuff too. He said you need some power to make them work. I saw him a few times making the boards work in overhead surf....keep up the Great Stoke!
