Anybody seen this yet???
Sunny Garcia has a very violent personality, and this is not the first time that happen. He just need some good psychiatric therapy.I hope he will pay for what he has done.I can understand that some people can grind your nerves, but you're not allowed to try to kill them.
I have seen this same type of shanagians antics at some of the more secluded breaks around SD, Sunny visits here quite often. Never quite seems to pick on the biggest guy in the water...strange. The gentleman in the vid was quite slight in built from my perspective. Was that response necessary? Sunny must have been threatened for his life....that what is always taught for that kind of a response.
We all come to grips some day when you are no longer "the man" in the water. We all try to hang on as long as we can. Usually we mature into a better, kinder person. That's why wars are not fought by 35+ year old guys.
It's nobel to stick up for your child...you have too, but..you can't travel around the world kicking peoples ass. Soon the word get out and the "right kind" of people will be waiting for you. kind of like a gun fighter in the old western films. We all know those guys that live to fight..and are good at it.
We can all set better examples and live by higher standards. There's always room for improvement. Sunny is a great guy, I hope someday he may gracefully float off into the unavoidable old age of surferdom.
Good luck Sunny, were pulling for ya.
…your too gentle with that S Garcia.
The guy is a druggo.
Violent people + “no longer the man” + bad business made + no formal education + circus + drugs are not a good combo in my book.
Poor Sunny … he’s his own worst enemy. You’ve gotta wonder if he’s cognizant that this is unacceptable behavior and that there will eventually be consequences. There already are. What was gained by this action Sunny? Your one of the most respected surfers on the planet. This makes people wonder if that respect they feel is misplaced. Being respected as a man is far more important … think about it.
Anyone remember the ''attitude adjustment'' that Nat Young got? Sunny seems to be headed in the same direction. The Aikau family used to pull the same crap if someone took off in front of Eddie. Saw it more than once at Sunset, in the late sixties.
this guy has no respect and is a coward.....his attitudes shows what he has inside his heart....thats sad ... i´m sorry about sunny garcia.....I really hope he heals yourself and enjoy his life.....
There is much evidence to the contrary.
Sunny has been punched in the face in NJ. Belmar Pro a while back, he came out of the water and was signing autographs and got sucker punched. Other than that, there arn’t too many people who are going to be able to take him on at 5’10ish and 200lbs of mostly muscle. This is not surprising from Sunny. Respect his surfing, but I am not a fan of his temper.
To get respect, you have to extend respect.....period.
Respect is not demanded, respect is earned. You can't sell it, buy it, or trade it. You can't be born into it, or fall into it.
I have surfed with Sunny and have always been shown respect and warmth. So from my personal experiences he has always been a gentleman to me. Obviously there is a troubled side to him, I've never been on the receiving end of it, but I've seen it live and in person on other people in the water.
As for the 5'10" and 200 lbs of muscle, as I said before there is always someone bigger and bader than you.. That headlock he got that little guy in, well....There are a few that would never let someone get them in a headlock like that. There are even a few more twisted individuals that hope someone tries to get them in a headlock like that. Someday if you look hard and long enough, you will find that twisted individual.
The problem is you never know who has training in these sorts of things......It's always best to treat everybody as if they are a good friend.
I hope Sunny finally sorts thing out.
Bill,
Is that when Nat smacked some kid in the water and the father asked who did it and the kid said Nat Young, so the father waited for the right time and beat him within an inch of his life. He needed 7 recronstructive surgeries to put his face back together. He was so embaressed he moved away. I may not have it completely right but that's what I heard from Mike Doyle.

Yep, that's about what I heard. Around '68, or '69, Nat was motormouthing at Sunset, and making a pest of himself. Fred Hemmings, Butch, and a few others told him to shutup or get out of the water. He shut up. He's not pleasant to be in the water with. At least that was my experience, and observation.
Maybe he should try cage fighting for a while,he might figure out what his profession is then.
If someone ever tries to pull that shit down here in Puerto Rico they better kill the dude in the fight because if not, who ever got beat up will look for the bully and possibly his family afterwards and just shoot em without any need of mastering any martial arts. We had 982 murders last year and I am not proud of it, but there are some crazy mofo’s out there. Better to talk it out, not fight and have a beer afterwards, it’s to easy to get an AK47 here in PR…
Obviously Sunny is spreading Aloha to the world.
I have no comment on the video, but I will say this - anytime I go out surfing, I remind myself that no wave is worth hassling over. I generally surf semi-crowded so. cal. point breaks, because that's whats available to me. I'm there to have fun. If I feel I'm being disrespected, I'll move down the line a bit, or up a bit. I'm 55 years old, I generally surf alone, and its easy for the younger guys to back-paddle me. You know - I'm in position, they paddle around behind me, then yell "I got it". If the vibe is aggro, I just go elsewhere.
I will say this - awhile back, I paddled for a wave, and another guy just up the line yelled something. I took off anyway, hit my turn, and then looked over. He was already gone. I had been out for 2 hours, got a few close-outs, and was still waiting to get one good wave. He just arrived. So I didn't feel bad, it was a beauty, and lined up way into the bay. I figured that was a good wave to get out with anyway. I get enough hassles in my land life. Surfing should be fun time!
Don’t know the guy personally, but rumor has it that Lance Ho’okano mellowed out after being prosecuted for thumping somebody in the water at Malibu back in the '90s. Maybe Sunny should take a lesson from a fellow Hawaiian.
Can understand the whole “protect your kid” instinct, being a parent myself. But unless this guy physically assaulted or otherwise injured his son first, Mr. Garcia’s behavior was totally disproportionate. Dressing the guy down verbally would’ve been sufficient, and it sounds like he has the physical presence to pull that off in a more than convincing manner.
Even at 16, I had to learn to resolve my own beefs in the water. He’s not doing his son any favors by interceding, especially like that.
My 2¢.
I could not agree more. I surf mostly Huntington Beach spots and I still can’t believe anyone would resort to violence over a wave. Life is way too short.
Sunny is simply a product of his environment…west side Oahu. Just like Johnny Boy or any of the other “Bad Boys” that come from the west side those people think it’s OK to beef first thing and they would much rather punch you in front of their friends so they can look tough then try to get along with others. That’s fine, we all expect that to happen in Hawaii. But why do contest organizers continue to let ignorant punks like Sunny compete? I’m sick of hearing about this clown. The guy gets paid to surf and he has an attitude? Sunny is simply ungrateful and ignorant. His sponsors should drop him, no contest should have him, and people in general should ridicule him into shame. And bottom line is he’s really nothing special, so many people surf so much better than him. He’s not that fun to watch surf, he doesn’t have any obvious style and his attitude simply makes people want to see him fail…like me. I mean the guy wanted to fight Curran (the mellowest guy in the world) in a legends heat…what an idiot! The camera man over in Australia that he attacked should be pressing charges and putting this dirt bag in the slammer! He should have been ban for life from the contest seen a long time ago and I hope one day I’m watching a video of someone beating his ass.
