SUNOVA REDUX

Hey DanB,

It’s a 2+1. I can ride it as a single if I want. By the look of the nose width and hard nose rail design it sounds like you can camp out on a nose ride for quite some time. Thus, the name Hangman…

Sorry to hijack this thread but does anyone know of any wood/bamboo fins that are FCS compatible, I just think they’d look great on my Speedneedle’s & Sunova’s?

Got my 9’6" Hangman!

and surfed it?? cant wait for the review! [and design specs haha]

Brian,

I do hope you bring your Sonova to the NJ AB3!

Hurry up and surf it! I want to hear how it goes.

Been super busy but have made time to ride my Sunova Hangman a few times in the past 2 weeks or so.

2 words : SO SWEET

Surfed it in a few different conditions.

Waist high and bumpy (2 sessions):

The board almost feels like it conforms to the wave and the ride is so smooth, like a Cadillac. It seemed to flow more than other longboards I’ve ridden. I could definitely feel a little acceleration off the bottom and the board turns solid.

It did take me a few waves to find the sweet spot for wave catching. For me, it’s a little more forward than a board of similar size. Maybe it’s becuase of the reduced weight or the fact I’ve been riding my shortboards a lot more lately.

knee high and clean:

Awesome. 2-3 stroke paddles and in. The board glides right into the wave. I like to do big sweeping left-go-rights into the pocket and run up to the nose. I don’t consider myself adept at noseriding at all but with the nose of the Hangman having the surface area and flexing down into the wave it felt super stable and allowed me to be more confident up there. Now if I can only teach myself to cross step back to the tail and cutback… one day, one day. But, it does cut back on a nice tight arc (when I stay in the back 1/3rd of the board). The tail is pulled in like a high performance LB.

Chest+ low tide dumping closeouts:

Yeah, I got worked. Definitely not the optimal longboard day but I like to push it. Did catch a few short rides, got some stoke from it. I bounced off the bottom a few times, I’m sure the board did too but no visable damage.

One thing I forgot to mention was the board made sections effortlessly on the waist high days. Cut right though the slop to cleaner faces. A few rides I had to kick out before I beached it.

Truely impressive. Can’t wait to surf it again and dial it in.

That’s a sweet board Brian, what does it weigh…is it vented…what are the final dimensions…??I need a good noserider down here in Florida! Thanks.

Really love that shovel nose on that bute.

I am in the market for a classic nosrider, with a similar shovel nose outline. How would I go about getting a sunova board?

The nose got my attention as well,Greenlight has them for sale I believe.

Hey Jesus,

Board dims are 9’6" x 23 5/8" x 2 7/8"

weight is 13 lbs 4 oz.

There is a full time gortex vent in the nose area. You never have to mess with it.

This board made surfing fun again for me. I want to ride it all the time. Took it out again on Sunday in knee high slop and had a good time. Usually I’d pass on a day like that and work.

So jealous. I like building AND buying boards. That one is a beauty.

Hey Greg,

I haven’t bought a board in over 5 years, been only surfing my homeshapes and borrowing friends’ boards to get a feel for different shapes. Got this Sunova to experience Bert’s sense of how a surfboard should perform on a wave and it has set a benchmark for me to aim for with my construction ideas and techniques. Probably never make a board as good as Bert but I enjoy a challenge.

If I was going to buy a board I would definately get one of Bert’s for the same reason you did. I’ve been very interested in the Hangman set up as a single fin. After seeing your post I decided to modify my best Bert styled board by removing the center fcs plugs and putting in an O’fishl longboard box. I’ve already surfed it as a 3, 4, & 5 fin and so far Bert’s Trifin setup is the best. I can’t wait to try it out as a single.

Any more updates? board looks beautiful as expected from bert…

i’m not familiar with those fins, is the foil thicker than usual fins? I know bert likes to run fatter ones for small wave setups… figured he’d put some of his own on there

ooowie
i had a sunova in my hands today for the first time

it is a 6.3 *19.75 * something…

balsa bottocks, corecell deck

it is NOT very beautiful though, i thought that bert would provide better quality,

dry lam with air pockets, ugly woody-nose, nasty spray paint that bled…

but… nice flex, about 3 kilograms [heavy] flat bottom

hope to buy it for 300 euros, the guy wants 600 Euros, more than the price of a new board…

not really, 699 for a firewire shortboard…

what do you guys think is reasonable to pay for such a board?

what is the new price in US dollars?

thanks

Wouter

Hey Mr. Marley,

The board us running FCS GL sidebites and a 8" cutaway. I think you can get a set of Bert's foils as an option.

I can't believe how long I can hold a high line with this board and pump the top 1/3rd of the wave ( 2 or 3 good pumps) without slipping. Can't even do that on any of my shortboards. Granted the rail shape of Sunova is much diffrent than conventional boards. I'd describe them as narrow box rails - about an inch of relative squareness and a small tucked under edge.

The board is allowing me, no... taking me to explore new parts of a wave without effort. It just flows. So much fun

How did the white paint delam the first Sunova?

interesting.. seems like from the pictures most of his rails look like the rails you'd see on a skimboard.. applied to a surfboard.

I signed up to demo one on your page so hopefully within the next month i'll get to ride one, cant wait!

600 hundred euros. fuk a duk mate thats bulshit

1800 kiwi

i should be able to make a new one a half a kilo lighter and frieght it over there for less then that
