Terrible loss to the world, he was a great conservationist and crazy man, he will be missed…
CRIKEY!!!
It’s amazing how fast news travels…
I saw a report on the tv news about 1pm, friend messaged me at 1.30, mum rang at 2 and even a surfboard building forum has had it…
Seems like he got his name worldwide. Great achievement. Tragic accident.

great surfer , too.
I feel for his wife and kids .

yes, terrible terrible news, a freak accident indeed.
you have really gotta admire the bloke, getting out there and doing what he loved and believed in, following his passion for wildlife and educating so many others along the way, his outragous energy and contagious excitement will surely be missed.
A truly great Australian and one that us ozzies can be proud of.
rest in peace steve, 1962-2006
and of course our hearts go out to his wife Terri and thier children Bindi and Bob.
thanks for the link pinhead !
If you have never seen Andrew Denton ,
please read this …
it appears his wife also has his enthusiasm , humour , and courage …
That’s sad, but not too surprising. He took a lot of risk with those venomous snakes. My family loved his programs and humour. I’ve never heard of someone getting pierced in the heart by a sting ray. Kind of strange. Isn’t it? Mike
yeah , on “A Current Affair” tonight they interviewed a guy who has swum with stingrays for twenty years , he got stung by one in the ocean once . In the foot. He showed the size of the barbs too. He said he was in the most pain for six hours that he had ever experienced , that they were giving him morphine , and he said he felt like it wasn’t working . He said in Steve’s case it would have been a fast death , with the heart being pierced by the barb . Awful stuff though .
I just can’t help feeling for his poor wife Terri , who was trekking in tasmania when it happened , and the poor girl bindi , and son bob. That girl especially really really loved her dad , you could just see it in the footage they showed in the 30 minute feature .
Steve’s mates at the zoo were just …dumbfounded …you could see the shock was still being worked through .
He will certainly be remembered for his fearlessness, his enthusiasm , and yes , his humour , too …
R.I.P. Steve Irwin

What a bummer. I think many of us thought it may happen one day by a snake or croc, but it’s still a horrible shock. I feel for his family. I have been nailed by a stingray before…they are nasty things. I hope it happened quickly for him.
yea surprised by a stingray for sure – But man that had to be a PAINFUL death – those dam barbs will go into yr bone. I understand the barb went into his heart. That’s a tough one.
FYI - best thing to do if you do get nailed by one is to pour very hot water on the area, that somehow neutralizes the venom. And the pain of the hot/near boiling water’s gonna feel easier than the barb. (sometimes the only place to find is in a radiator of some closeby car )
Sad news for sure. I’m surprised how it bummed me and fams out.
He lived a risky, dangerous life…none the less it doesn’t make it any less sad or suprizing…I heard the news on CNN last night at work(early this morning, labor day)…I guess Jeff Corwin will have to take up the slack…he’s just as crazy about animals as Steve was.
Remember guys,he died doing what he loved. If he was here now and had a choice to have been something else in life…I don’t think he would have changed a thing.
My condolences to his wife and 2 children…now I got to break it to my two daughters, who were big fans of the croc hunter.
Wife cried at this news. I feel bad.
The pain for me is that the guy was so stoked about what he was doing, so energized by life’s energy in (other) powerful animals, radiating amplified life energy to everyone who saw him
STEVE IRWIN WAS an embodiment of STOKE
Hope for healing for his family and friends.
Anyone have any pics of him surfing??
Heard last night
Poor Stevo… RIP mate.
Comisserations go out to Terry, Bindy and Bob.
Always got told told he was a very distant cousin… Guess I’ll probably never know for sure, now.
Very sad news… Our family liked his shows and general stoke for life and to top it all off he surfed! He made me laugh so much… We will miss him…

Definitely very sad indeed. Who would have thought that a stingray barb could kill someone ??? Sure I’ve heard people getting stung on the foot, but in the chest… That will surely make me a bit more cautious when around stingrays …
Sorry Steve got in trouble, I know that for the Aussies he was an ambassador…that being said, as a Marine Biologist/teacher and having been hit four times in my life I can say that it was no freak accident…
By friends accounts from Australia he was touching the stingray…
Stingrays don’t sting, they stab or slice which was what happened to Steve…
The barb penetrated his chest from below the ribs comming up thru the diaphram and punctured the heart…a few pumps and he was gone…
Reminds me of Brandon Lee without the snakes & crocs…
On a happier note, the dude could surf! One of his programs that aired here in the US was a trip he took to an island (Galapagos I think) and showed him surfing some big lefts. He wasn’t too bad for a goofie! I hope he catches a few where he’s at, there aren’t things there that bite.
good on ya mate…
This morning they interviewed his manager, he said that Steve was snorkling over the stingray about 2’ away when it lashed out, the barb was around 7" long. He wasn’t stirring it up either for a change. Steve stopped, pulled it out and then passed away instantly, there was nothing anyone could do…
And to top it all off, it was all on film…
Just the way he would have liked it…
I saw that footage. Surprised me how well he surfed. Aggressive just like he was with animals. The spot was the Freeline camp in South Sumatra. Good left point.
