Hey Mikefish , your definition of “not so well paid” and mine are obviously completely different.
Anyone who from the age of about 16 is paid to surf, has never had to work a day in their life and gets paid to surf is in my books “well paid”.
I’m not saying he isn’t a cool dude but calling him an artist is a bit of a stretch (i know that wasn’t you).
An artist is someone with something to say, something to express, a way of expressing themselves which makes people look at the world in fresh ways. An artist is a first principle and primary cause.
It takes more than a smooth cutback and the ability to stand on the nose without flapping your arms about.
Joel has been a very carefully managed and packaged commodity since a very early age…that process has been well documented. His skill has been to carefully appropriate the styles, designs and “vibe” of earlier historical periods in surfing.
His act found a receptive market and good luck to him.
By way of contrast Nat Young ,at Joels age, had been a world champion, written a book, made two movies, shaped many boards, run for political office on a platform of environmental responsibility and been arrested twice.
I just think Joel Tudor is a rather bland and uninteresting modern version of those who he models himself on.
For the record, no disrespect to San Diegans or the historical contribution of this great surf town to surfing and surfboard design.
Hanging in the carpark at Windansea after a session ,necking a couple of cold brews, watching the sunset, and soaking up the vibes is one of my most cherished memories.
Also for the record, I’ve nothing against the Surftech business model (ethical concerns about Asian labour notwithstanding).
I’ve had lifelong surfer/shapers like Geoff McCoy and Wayne Deane tell me in person it’s been a great boon to them.
In my eyes, it is enhancing custom surfboard making because it is giving these great craftsmen a guaranteed income stream.
By the way Mike I checked out your website and their are alot of beautiful artworks there.
To quote Michelangelo in your board spiel “I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free” and then advertise a bunch of surftech pop-outs is beyond lame. It’s pretentious BS of the highest order.
Anyway I guess that’s the modern world we live in.
