what is the best type of paint to use on EPS? I have heard Tempera paint may work, and if so any type or is there a brand that works best?
tempera is good. holds colors without fade. you laminate over it easily. cheap. lots of colors to choose from. I use it often. As noted above, read Atomized’s threads for expert advice.
the only problem I can see is you get this irresistible urge to put colored hand prints all over the board. maybe glue some little macaroni pieces on here and there. fight the urge.

why do you thin it? do you have to put anything on it before glassing?
there’s been lots of discussion about this.

Cheap craft store Tempera works great. Thin it with clear acrylic floor polish (50/50 worked for me). I bought a bottle of it at Wally World.
Pay attention to “Atomized” when you read past posts…
why do you thin it? - Right out of the bottle it is too thick to spray.
do you have to put anything on it before glassing? - No but a light coat of clear acrylic floor finish will help stabilize it and prevent bleeding.
Your basic craft/hardware store stuff works fine and isn't too bad as far as color fastness. Do a good spackle job on your shaped blank and sand it smooth with dry wall screen. Beware of getting all fancy with lots of mask offs, etc. With EPS it is easy to pull beads out when you yank the tape.
john,
not too long ago ..........i remember when everyone used water and/or alcohol.................................
................then some punk @#$% c-came up with a-acrylic floor finish like, "future" as a paint thinner.
the nerve of some people !

i used tempera paint on the last board i shaped. its getting glassed now but i’ll post pics next week when i pick it up. just painted straight on to the finished board.
Credit where it’s due…
Thanks Herb =)
I have yet to rip open any diapers though =D
What about using tempera paint over a board that was finish with a sanded finish. Board is old and discolored. Can board be sanded and prayed with tempera paint and given some kind of seal coat.

back in the days,
some board builders would airbrush the sand, finished, hotcoat and seal it with a gloss and polish.
herb
ya i have recently down one of those with the entire board airbrushed
now that was some scary sanding especially on the rails
So I am just using a paint brush to paint it on, still thin it? Do you have to use spackle on EPS before glassing and painting?
dude, welcome… but use the search function. Every question you have asked so far has been asked and answered a hundred times easy. Take a minute to search before you ask and then feel free to post a new thread if you have a specific question or a queation relating to not undertsanding part of the process. People will help you. Otherwise all you are doing is creating shit threads that end up cluttering up the site. READ the Poly build thread Read the Epoxy build thread.
Your comment that you would rather surf than read pretty much just says fuck you to the people on this site that took hours or weeks building those high information threads specifically for new people like yourself. They are a great resource USE THEM. If you are to lazy to spend an hour to read what took people years to perfect than dont do your own boards because you are going to be to lazy do that right as well.
Dont be that guy that relys on others to do the work. Log in devote some time and you will be much better off in the end.
And dont use a brush.
So is there a paint to use with brush? Dont have a sprayer?
Howzit sk1mm3r, You can use a brush with any paint,it's what kind of paint job that makes the difference. If you are a true artist you can most likely use a brush for any design and evenwhole boards. I have done a lot of spray the whole board then come back and use a brush with a different color and design. When I do tiger stripes I spray the yellow but use a brush to do the black stripes. I even posted a picture of one of those boards a few years back but don't know if I have it on this computer. Aloha,Kokua

I have painted on my boards with a brush (acrylic 'tho, not tempera).
Don’t be this guy. You’ll sound like a wanker and besides without new discussions about things that were covered in the past every forum on the internet would die.
I don’t use brushes, I use foam rollers and foam chip brushes. I’m using the cheep acrylics found in any art store or wally mart.
I totally agree with with Mako224, And this is just my opinion, but when i search all i find are treads with people saying this topic has already been covered and never find just the a start to the point answer. when i started this site i thought people were gonna help me get my answers. so to people like Mako224, huckleberry, and kokuo. thank you so much for the help. I am going to try to use a brush and prob use tempera paint. Huckleberry what type of acyrlic do you use?
