Thanks for the input! Its funny actually these pictures were taken last week, but since then I have purchased foam flooring, bought the tarp to hang and installed shelves above the lighting! Glad to hear I am on the right track. I will update the pictures later on this weekend and you can let me know if you have any further suggestions.
San Luis Obispo, CA - Nick Cooper at "The Craft" recently opened a shaping room for rent by the hour. I checked it out today and it's really nice. He also has a full line up of tools, materials, and supplies for the do-it-yourselfer as well as an in house glassing service.
Man those are some realy expensive glassing prices $399 for 5’9-6’11 size range. Who would pay that much? Just payed $210 for this 6’6 fins included. (Scott Anderson, Aqua Tech.)
“I think that includes the cost of your blank, 8 hours or shaping bay time and use of tools plus the glass job.”
That’s how I understand it as well. You buy the blank, get the use of tools and room, and Nick glasses it for you. That price is for a basic glass job. Any bells or whistles are extra.
He teaches shaping at a local college (Cal Poly) as part of one of their courses. Lots of guys have taken the class, shaped a board and had him do the glassing.
He just opened the shaping room at the material outlet store where he is the first and only guy in this neck of the woods to offer one-stop material shopping.
For a backyard guy like myself, it is huge. I no longer have to make the trip to Ventura or Santa Cruz which have been my only other options in the past.
For students, apartment dwellers, or anybody who just doesn’t have the space but wants to make their own, the shaping room rental is a nice option. There aren’t very many places that offer that service. Judging by the number of shaped blanks I saw in the racks, quite a few people think it’s worth it.
Basically if the room and tool rent are included it looks like he’s priced everything so that you end up paying a pretty high retail price espeacaly if you want paint, gloss and polish. He has tool rentals listed separately. ($35 an hour to use a skil 100.) If anyone wants to shape a board I’m always happy to help. You can do it in my room (Free)
…hello The Craft, yours is the first shaping bay with 2 adjacent racks that I have ever seen…
What s exactly is the idea behind? teach other guy meanwhile you are shaping?
Hello Wavecraft, in the tail perspective photo, the tail have V to the very end, it s near a consensus to fade out the V after the rear fin to keep turbulence, etc under control
may be is the perspective.
I do not get your prices very well; also Mcdings prices;
do you say that you sell a STD clear shortboard for around 250 Dollars to the customers?! very cheap prices; almost impossible to handle a living or may be you sell lots
Always some haters here on Sways. That’s why I love this place!!!
To clarify: $399 is a complete board package that includes, any blank under 7’0, use of our bay including hand tools, and glassing.
We charge $10/ hour for use of the bay, including hand tools. Like you pointed out, power planer rentals are extra. If you have your own, you can bring your own planer, and just pay the $10/ hour.
Why is it extra to rent a power planer. LIABILITY. It’s the one tool that can seriously hurt you. This way we limit our liability. First time shapers are encouraged to just use hand tools…lets face it, first time shapers do more harm than good with a planer. Experience shapers are encouraged to bring their own planer.
I think if you look around at other BUSINESSES that rent out a bay, you’ll find our prices on the cheaper side. Our goal is to keep people hand shaping surfboards, and give people who don’t have a place to do it, a good facility to shape a board. We built a double bay so that Father / son or daughters can shape a board together. Or two friends can shape next to each other. Hopefully it will be good for the central coast community.
Hey Nick - probably true, but I don’t think any haters on this thread, just a different viewpoint. Everything is kinda relative, depending on viewpoint.
So, now that you’ve weighed in on the topic…how about posting up some pics?
I don’t hate you. I was just looking at your price list for glassing only. Your way up there man. Maybe it’s because of your location but, just saying I could never pay that much. From what I could tell I’d be paying at least another $100 or more per board at that pricing. I try to give the best bargain I can to anyone that orders a board from me. I just wouldn’t want to pass that cost on to them if I can help it. Next time I’m in the area I’d like to come by and check out the hand shaping tools that you sell. I think it’s always good to find another place that sells those items.

I’ve been to birds surf shed. That place is fantastic. Everybody should see that place at least once even if you don’t surf, it’s amazing. Both Bird and Robin Prodanovich are realy cool.
The price for a sanded short board with fin system can run from an extremly low $180-190 thru $250. Average these days seems to be just above $200. Maybe $225 Although I have see the higher end of the $200’s. Say $280. Depends on Poly or Epoxy and any bells or whistles, ie gloss, S cloth, quad setups etc… I would say that pretty much covers Calif. from Santa Cruz to San Diego. Most glass shops will let you use a room for free if the blank is glassed in house… I built a second room in my shop for exactly that reason. If I glass it you use the room for no$$$. If you want to glass it yourself you can rent the room hourly or by the day. If you take more than two or three hours to do a shortie; I’ll be tempted to chase you out and finish it up for you just to free up the room. Yeah things sure have changed in SLO County. JG gone. Flecky RIP. No more clandestine operation down at the Los Berros Chicken Ranch etc. After ten years on Maui perfecting my chops and a nice little setup taking shape here in Oregon I could never go back… Lowel PS-- I do miss the damned Ranch though,
