Just went over to your website and checked it out. Clicked on your glassing prices. You’re in line with the prices I tossed out in my post above. The Poly gig is cool. Hope you make it. Lowel.
John-- Good info as always. If I were down on the CC we’d probably be hangin’ out alot. Maybe next winter I can get out of the weather up here and we can “rubber-ducky” the Ranch. Got mucho on my plate right now trying to get this shop open by Spring break. Lowel
Mitch------- Sounds right on to me. I try to get the most I can depending on length and degree of difficulty, Even in hard times though(behind in the rent etc); I would never touch anything for less than $75-$100 for a shortie and $150 for a longboard. And I am relatively fast. You probably should have added another $25 to $75 to that board though. Just for overhead and profit. Al’s, Rusty’s and Christensons are retailing in shops for $500-$600 currently. You’re a good craftsman Mitch. You’re consistent and never seem to turn out anything that isn’t top notch and as good as any shaper around. Lowel
Thanks Lowel, I appreciate the compliments. If I realy were a big name in the industry like those guy are, 5 to 6 hundred may be doable. That board was a bro deal to an old friend. That’s one of my problems, I have to many old bro’s. By the way your stuff looks great to.
Best regards: Mitch
Hay Reveb: For short boards under 7’0 I usually try to make $125 over the cost of the blank and glassing. The 6’6 board in the photo cost me $55 for the blank $210 for glass. (standard glass–Top 6+4+4oz. tail patch / Bottom 6oz. fine sanded gloss coat FCS fusion fin plugs and three fins) from Scott Anderson at Aqua Tech. a decent price. Roland at Surf Works will do the same but with a fin system called surfinz which are comparable to FCS and compatible with FCS fins for $185 So I payed 265 for the blank and glass +125 for shaping for a total selling price of $390 But the guy I made it for was an old friend from Jr. High and High school days. So I sold it to him for $365 a $25 discount. I made $100 The V that you see in the tail isn’t V It’s a soft contoured double concave thru the last third of the bottom thru the fin area continuing all the way thru out the back of the foiled tail with very hard edges. It makes for massive off the bottom and top drive, down the line speed and snappy turning ability. I’ve been experimenting with double concave channels of different depths contours, entrance and exiting angles for 30 years. There pretty much my trademark. All originally stemming from Malcom Campbell’s 3 and 5 fin bonzer designs. Here’s another recently shaped performance series . 6’'4 / PS-11 thruster with the surfinz fin system. The surfinz system also has some versatility in that you have about 1/2 in. of forward and back adjustment to experiment with, that you don’t have with FCS - systems.
…you ve got good price for that size of blanks…
so Roland the Argentinian? man, is he still in business? just few years ago I saw around 20 boards made by him that did not look like a pro work…
I see, I do the glassing and painting, also panels, foiling and glass ons fins(if not I use 4wfs) and yes not so bad 100 or a bit more for only shaping without all the other hassles.
You know, V have 3 possibilities (“straight”, concave or rolled)
I remember lots of board, included mine around late 80s or early 90s with that type of tails but I discontinued it for the fade out thing.
I’ve only had Roland glass 6 board so far. So far they all came out nice. Had one small issue with a bit of a sand through on the tip of the nose that was easily dealt with but it’s something he should have notice and taken care of before it came back to me. Other than that they all look good. I hadn’t seen any of his earlier work from the past. He has lower prices and provide pickup and delivery, which I like. But still most of my boards go to Aqua Tech.
Hooked up my clark modified hitatchi to the slinky hose from foam EZ. Ran it through 1.5" PVC and hooked it to my 9 gallon RIGID shop vac. I have a hepa filter and also use a dust bag inside to protect the motor.
I am not lying when I say it works beyond my expectations. No dust particles anywhere after planing. Sanding is a different story of course.
That garage/bay is just too sterile. Ha! Ha! I like the way you stapled the pastic at the top of the wall to the ceiling. Confines stray dust to your bay and not on the mini-van. Just kidding you a bit. Seriously that’s a great set up for a garage. Well done.
Just my two cents. I know that those aluminun roll-up doors are noisy. To quiet that room from a really loud echo, try some sound board. It is cheap and sold at Home Depot. It really quiets a room. I have been putting in my shaping rooms for years. You probably could cut it to fit in the door panels. Good luck. Room looks good.

Really nice for a garage shaping bay.
Wait until you do a few boards?
Here my room after I remodled.
I needed to put a PC in the corner of the bay to comunicate with my cnc machine.
It’s not as clean today as when completed it.
Kind regards,

Haha thanks McDing. I am living in a small apartment, so the plastic seals off the 8" gap the owners decided to leave between each tenants garage.
Thanks for the tip on the soundboard Barry. I was actually looking for something like that. I Think I will invest in that once I get my first few noise complaints from neighbors.
For those struggling to get the side lighting right, maybe this will help

That’s good Bill. Should help a few folks. Funny . I consider you one of a few experts on this kind of stuff and your dimensions confirm my own. Set up a few rooms over the years, but mostly by eye. Then afterward checking my dims. A framing level is always a handy thing to use to level the lights and shaping rack. I like to have the rack and the lights centered and in the same place lengthwise. Generally I position the rack lengthwise and set the distance between the racks to accomodate the largest variety of blank sizes without adjusting the rack. Then place a blank on the rack and check it’s height based on where it comes out in relationship to my belly button, Adjust as necessary, Then set the height of my lights a few inches higher, Check everything with the tape and the level. It comes out very close to your dims.
Cool McDing. By the way, where did you move to in Oregon?
Because I have a daughter nearby I settled in PC. I’m selling Blanks-Resin-Cloth, shaping a few, glassing and ding repair so I need to be somewhat centrally located. PC’s surf is like any other beack break; average with those rare classic days… If it were just about the surf I would have settled about fifty miles North of here. I’m able to make the occasional run up that way and sometimes stop in at a well know State Park along the way. The scene has exploded since you were up here. Spring Break thru Labor Day they come out of the wood work. An ever ingreasing # of die hards thru the winter picking off the days when conditions settle. It’s a move that I will make the most of, but would have prefered to stay on Maui with a rented bay at the Cannery and walking my blanks down the hall to Dave Gott. I’m learning to fish and how to tarp a roof the Oregon way. Lowel
It was rad meeting you yesterday and seeing some of your new projects in person. Thanks for the help on the fin placement and shaping in general. Really motivating and inspirational to the young guys like myself. See you around!
downtheline:
Your off to a good start!
Have fun, stay stoked!

Gave up shaping with the bucket racks after constant movement and unlevel nature of them. I picked up the racks from foam EZ, bolted them down and added some mustache duct tape to hold down thefoam and give it a little character.
