.... " the photography thread " ??

Don't worry Ben, catfish probably has no idea where you are either... It's fall here in Florida, end of tropical cyclone season.  Those waves were produced by a storm named Sandy.

I had a Nikonos when I was young and enjoyed photography, but couldn't afford the Kodachrome and slide processing to shoot as much as I would have liked. That's the biggest thing about digital photography for me; the ability to just fire away and sort 'em out later.

After a couple of point and shoots, a couple of years ago my wife got me a Nikon D3100 - a reasonably affordable ''pro-sumer' 'DSLR. Starter kit is body and 18-55mm lens. I got the bug again and last Christmas she got me a 70-300, which covers most of what I want to do. (although if I were wealthy I would spend much more, most of it on glass). If you want to shoot surf pics from land a DSLR is the only way to go. Most of them shoot great vid also.

One of the keys that some might overlook is to shoot the biggest files possible. My son has a Nikon AW100 point and shoot that has produced some incredibly sharp images just because he has the wick turned up. Memory is cheap.

Hi guys thought id post some photos from my last trip to bali, shot on a canon ftb 1971 manual focus. manual exposure. 35mm [img_assist|nid=1069514|title=bali|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=640|height=424][img_assist|nid=1069515|title=bali|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=640|height=424][img_assist|nid=1069516|title=bali|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=640|height=604][img_assist|nid=1069517|title=bali|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=640|height=499]

what lens did you use for these ?  what speed film ?

did you print them at college ?

and

did  you get any surfing shots  as well ?

cheers

  ben

cheers Mike !

I look forward  to seeing more !

especially if you take any surfing shots

" Don't worry Ben, catfish probably has no idea where you are either " ...

  haha yeaaahhh

considering that your previous  president thought 'australia' was arnie's homeland ,

  then ,

what chance would the average guy there have of knowing ?!     :)

Actually , I quite like the fact that people DON'T know , and so don't want to come here ....thanks , georgey w. boy !  ... maybe , in future , every surf photo I post here should have the captain 'arnieland' , eh ?!  ...just to ensure the ignorance / confusion  continues ..... : )   ]

cheers .... and " greetings from "Arnieland'  ! "  ( .... this is not to be confused with 'Arnhem Land' , of course ...[google , if unsure]  )

  ben

[keep up the good work , sir !]

did you print it at college ?

is ilford 'multigrade' still the paper they use at photo colleges , nowadays ?

I wish we lived nearby , so you could inherit my enlarger , lamp , and lens ...

I  just threw out all my trays last month , after ? 8 years ? of non use ....

can you set up a darkroom at home , mate ?  [ do you have a spare bathroom , for example?]

....maybe I should get a shot of how mine used to be set up , "for memory's sake" , eh ?  :) ...the 'go pro ' would get it all in the piccie , too, i'm sure ?!

  cheers !

  ben

Thanks, Mike for anwsering the ??.But I do know where Fins is.Heres a east coast quiver

I'm on the bottom of those boards ....

   nice quiver , mate !

  cheers

  ben

in my "old days" here  ,  this woulda been a "conversation"   between a chipfish and a catfish  ...and for a year or so , there was also a neighbour , on here ..."moonfish" ,  too ... which all sounds pretty fishy , to me ....

update...

  often overlooked ,

  but

in keeping with the 'keep it simple' thread on surfboards , here at sways......

  backgrounds.

Keep them simple .

Uncluttered.

Rearrange them , if possible  . For example ,  if still life photos [eg : boards , fins , resin swirls .]

Take a bit of extra time to walk around the [still life] subject , get in close to crop out unwanted details in the background'if' background 'can't be changed.

Consider how lighting [and programmes] can alter the contrast between the subject and the background too . [for example , late afternoon , angled light , hitting and highlighting a subject against a dark background]

  cheers !

  ben

so…

it’s been a WHILE !

… HAS anyone got any updates , any of their photos / photographic knowledge to share with us , please ?

cheers !

O.G. FISH…RECOVERED…LMFAO !

This is what it looked like at my local, today. We had a supposed blizzard overnight, but it was not as severe as predicted. 6" of snow on the ground, offshore winds at about 20 kts, and the air temp was 15 degrees. Water temp is around 36f.

My camera (Nikon D 300) decided to change the white balance settings on its own and messed up the exposure. I had to do some major rehab in Photoshop to get this image.

This spot is about 1/4 mile from my house

Hey SammyA     Are you east of the CC Canal or are you south of PVD?

cheers herb !

great to hear from you !

Good to see this thread back

Gotta love fog. Every waves’s a surprise when it’s foggy.

This was on my phone, gotta love phone cameras now. Third board I shaped. Excuse the bad compression (facebook’s fault.)

Also from my phone.

Must be hard t stand on a surfboard with only one leg, or only one leg is warm and the other is frozen.

I am wondering how much benefit I will get from a mid grade lens with 50 more mm of zoom.  The shot below is with a Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4.0-5.6 IS II Kit lens on a T5i with no filters.  It is cropped a bit

I am considering the Canon Ef 70-300Mm F4-5.6 Is or the Tamron AF 70-300mm f/4.0-5.6 SP Di VC USD XLD in the 350 to 400 US$ range, but am not sure it is worth the expenditure.

Any opinions?
