The WORKSHOP, and some observations.

The design workshop seemed to have been well received by those in attendance. Many new entrants to the sport, and craft. There was one young man, 12 years of age, in the front row, if you know him have him contact me by PM. The contributions and insights, offered by Mr. Jim Phillips, were certainly a highlight of the afternoon. Pizza and beer wasn’t bad either. I want to thank ALL who attended, and by doing so, gave support to the Surfing Heritage Foundation. Speaking of that sort of thing, Swaylocks own BALSA, a tireless contributor here, has shown his care and concern for the sport of surfing and its’ history, by having made a significant and spontanious contribution to the Surfing Heritage Foundation, in support of its’ mission. The sport needs more people like him. He is certainly a good example of what is good about the Swaylock/Surfing community. The highlight of the raffle was an EPS, quad, shortboard, donated by Mr. Dennis Ryder. The time really seemed to fly by. It ALWAYS does, when you’re having fun. Thanks again folks.

The kid in the front was Mason, his father was there…he seemed to be either a contributor or otherwise

associated with the foundation. When you get his contact info, send it my way…I need to pay him for

picking my ticket.

Durbs “The Turbulator” Durbins and I took the quad out that evening in some tasty southbay windswell…

Let’s just say it’s a SHREDDER!

Big thanks to Bill, Jim and especially all the vendors who donated generously…Ken, Spero, Larry, Foam EZ

really showed up.

Stoked.

Thanls to Bill Thrailkill, Jim Phillips and all contributors. The Surfing Heritage Museum is unbelievable. If in San Clemente, do stop and check it out.

I had a chance to meet and put a face to several imaginary internet friends. Had the pleasure of meeting Bill, Jim, Robin Mair and Dennis Ryder in person. Thanks Dennis for the info on rocker stuff.

Many thanks to you Bill and Jim Phillips as well as all the sponsors who generously donated items. Just for the record I didn’t win everything, having my twin brother there just made it seem like I did. If anyone is in contact with Wayne Rich please forward a thank you for the fin and let him know we’re praying for a speedy recovery.

The event was great, I just wish we had more time. It would have been nice to have met more of the Swalockians than I had a chance to.

Mahana,

There for a while, it DID look like you were winning everything. The donors to the raffle, were generous to a fault. Glad you enjoyed the event.

I’m gonna make my best impersonation of one famous swaylockian and say:

What…

about…

the photos???

Please, maaaaaaaaaaaaaaate???..

After reading this thread I am now sad to know that I didn’t know this was happeneing and did not attend.

Maybe next time.

CH

Late to this thread, but wanted to say thanks to Bill for organizing this, to Jim Phillips for speaking so articulately, and Robin Mair for putting up with my incessant questions.

Thanks also to the super generous donors mentioned above, and looking forward to next year’s edition.

Bill, this guest-speaker thing is a brilliant idea. I say next year, take it to the next level – a full panel of guest speakers. Plus, that way you can relax all day ;>)

balsa, I brought my digital camera and two memory cards, but the museum asked me not to take pictures. They said they’re in the process of digitizing everything to help raise money for the museum.

Thanks for all the hard work Bill! Thanks to Jim, the sponsers and the Foundation for letting us run amok in an AMAZING collection of surfboards. It was great to see the usual suspects again as well as meet all the faces behind the alias’. What a great event!!!

Bill, It was a great event as we expected it to be. Thank you.

We were able to sponge in a wealth of knowledge from you and Jim the Genius. (I’m beginning to think that he actually is a genius.) And so much amazing history there.

I was especially proud of the two fathers who brought their sons. One had just completed his first surfboard, and he was stoked. And the young man in the front row, or the legendary “Front Row Kid” had some excellent questions. The next generation of shapers!

I hope this will happen again next year, and I second the idea of an expanded guest speaker list.

One of the attendees asked, “What is this Swaylocks that everybody keeps talking about?” Hopefully, he’s now logged on.

Thanks again Bill, and to everyone who attended.

Doug

lulz…

I think the first two questions were:

“what is this swaylocks that every keeps talking about”

and

“what is a hull”

The kid, the top prize, and the shaper Dennis Ryder.

Thanks Bill, Jim, and The Surfing Heritage Foundation for a great event. I think most of our minds filled up by 1:00P.M. Can’t wait to get started on my next shaping project.

Hey Dudes,

Wow, I just want to say THANK YOU-

To everyone who was there. This workshop was awesome. Special thanks to the Surfing Heritage Foundation, Tom, Bill, Jim, Casey, Robin (Probox), Brad (foamez.com) and evey-one who was there. (The dude in the front- with the white Moon shirt (yellow logo).

I had a very good time

met a few swayockian’s and got to do a one on one chat with Jim and then Bill

got to see a friend from the Islands Robin Mair

Met Etmo (good guy)

A new friend Tad , you never called !!!

Oh ya! I met Tuna, and John Mellor

I swear Ambrose and Jim Phillips could be brothers

LOL!

Bill,

It was a fantastic day! I enjoyed every minute. The enthusiasm and stoke… infectious. Jim was so relaxed and full of information and delivered it so well. Meeting and talking with some of the Swaylocks members was great.

One more time, thanks for putting this together and being an informative and gracious host.

D.R.

Thank you very much Bill and Jim for giving great talks. I have to say that there was a ton of information provided along with many ideas to go home and try. My buddy Heath was the guy that won 2 longboard blanks and let me tell you riding cramped in the corner of a honda accord so that the blanks would fit was well worth it. And yes you can fit a 9’7" blank into a honda accord, pretty much touches the windshield and you better be careful closing the trunk. I brought him along so I could share some of the joy I get out designing and building boards and now it looks like I will be tearing down my little 8 x 8 shed and building a new shed to accommodate shaping those two blanks.

Thank you again Bill and thanks to all the people that contributed to the raffle as well as a big thank you to Surfing Heritage Foundation for hosting this event.

Cheers,

Mike

Here’s a little slide show from the Workshop for those who couldn’t attend. I’m sure those of you that did attend can elaborate on the pictures. http://www.foamez.com/blog/

Enjoy!

Aloha etmo:

If you were the one sitting in front of me, as I said then, I was more than stoked to answer your questions. Knowledge is useless if it is not shared! Feel free to contact me if you have any additional questions, and if you do please remind me of your real name as it is somewhat embarrassing only remembering a user name.

It really was nice to be able to meet so many people who I only knew by there user name, sure wish I was able to remember all of their real names! Also great to reconnect with some people I had met in the past.

Bill, I hope this will become an annual event as it really is a great idea. I agree with Etmo that the idea of a guest panel would be great as it would provide for a very diversified set of ideas and answers.

Sure was nice to see some of the boards in the foundations collection!

Thanks Bill and Jim, and everyone who shared and donated. As a newbie to shaping I really appreciate the information that I was able to absorb. I hope to attend more workshops in the future!

that’s sweet!
