Politics is surfing through environmental impact. Politicians make decisions that govern the health of our surfing environment, and if you’ve ever surfed in untreated sewerage you’ll agree its essential for the future of surfing and shaping to ensure theres a healthy global environment.

Political discussion are evident here on Sways in threads about fin systems, overseas factories, high profile popout makers even choosing moderators, now that’d qualify as political…?

And non-surfing OT threads are popular with everyone here too, so Swaylocks isnt devoid of political debate, its just biased in its selection of topics.

Hey Larry, mate that is my fin, 83’ through multi fins, Byron Bay. I suppose it does’nt matter where I reply, hope you don’t mind that it’s here, now I’ve started. Firstly to Hicksy, mate I could have said that better, I think you could have handled it better as well, I strongly take offence to being treated like a child. What’s the definition of an alcholholic, someone who drinks the same as you, that you don’t like. I like to wash foam dust down with beer, probably not the best formula for the computer, but in the end surfboard design talk bores the shit out of me, I have been looking at them, doing everything on them, dreaming about them, lying awake thinking about them, stressing cause I don’t make enough to support my family from them, surfing them, talking about them, everything else about them for 38 years.[not surfing, just making] I know about them, I don’t know bugger all about what Silly and his mate were talking about and I reckon he’s big enough and ugly enough to look after himself. What’s drinking American beer and making love in a canoe got in common, f@@king close to water. The deal down here , is that, we like to pay the piss out of one another, more like it’s mandatory, if a mate starts sucking up to you, start worrying. Okay some surf board design and dolphin talk, and by the way if anyone wanted to ask me about measurements or anything, I would answer, ok, the other day I was surfing at Rainbow Bay and this dolphin came up to me, came about a third out of the water looked at me and I thought he/she was saying hello, what a buzz, till he/she went back under lifted his/hers tail and had a red legrope tightened up around its tail fin, with scarring, probably asking for help, it made me very sad, legropes suck. I respect the moderators, they by name are moderate, I’m not, I’m not as radical as I used to be, but I’m me, I could never be a judge or moderator, by the way I have been kicked out of better joints than this. I figure if you decide to let us guys down here in, you’re gonna have to put up with a bit of shit now and again, respect to all H.

Hi guys,

I agree that politics, whaling, food, music, toll roads through Trestles and many other things have a lot to do with surfing, but i don’t think they have a lot to do with surfboard design and construction.

This is not a general “surfing forum”, this is a technical forum, specifically dedicated to an small part of surfing: surfcaft design and construction. If this bores me, or sometimes i’m full of it, or sometimes i just don’t feel the passion to write anything about surfboard design and construction i know hundreds of different places where i can post my thoughts, and i do it.

If someone is producing surfboards in a country where production costs are cheaper for many reasons and this is causing any issues to shapers, glassers, fin guys, whoever in any other place in the world, i think is “surfboard design and construction” related talking about why and how to handle that, and how and why you should act to be able to keep doing what you love: shaping.

One of the greatest things of this site is how much some really knowedable people share information asking nothing back, without all those contributors this place would be very different. So if someone from “our community” is going through a bad situation (ie. health issues, death, etc) i think anything we do/discuss about it should be (is being) welcome in this forum.

If some guys representing the companies that design and produce fin systems are here to talk about their product: that’s surfboard design and construction, and that’s a good thing for Swaylocks as long as they are open minded enough to handle constructive criticism and open minded enough to discuss and inform about the pluses and minuses from their systems, as they’ve been doing for a long time now. If they only post advertisements about their products: that’s not welcome.

Maybe it’s just me, but i have the feeling that the “rules” are really clear and easy to understand why they’re here: because we want a “surfcraft design and construction forum”. Sometimes, some guys go out of topic and moderators do nothing about it… well, if Swaylockers show interest on the topic and everything goes ok on a politely, comfortable way sometimes is a hard job for moderators knowing where to draw the line. After all mods are just Swaylockers that are helping to keep this place the way it is, and the way you like it, that’s why you come here so often.

Anyway, if you guys have any constructive thoughts about how this forum could improve i think everyone is open to read about it!

By the way, i think this thread belongs to the “Using Swaylocks” forum…

Hi coque, with respect, it’s a fine line what you’re talking about, all fin design came from dolphins and whales, fish etc, if Silly alludes to that first is he allowed to talk about the real problems later, if the Rasta clip is shown[surfing], is the one with him and the Japanese killing dolphins allowed to be shown then, it’s all relevant and surely there’s books on how to fix your dings, H.

Easily settled though drove um to the two largest stores down town last night on a whale hunt and thankfully we struck out. I even had them ask the clerks.

I have no real idea of what started all this but I’d agree there seems some inconsistency - I looked through the latest 25 topics and at least 24% have nothing really to do with design/construction. While there is a some piss taking, Swaylocks seems a pretty civilised place. If things are getting offensive, I suggest simply advising the combatants to sort it out off line. If a topic is of no interest it will die anyway. Perhaps like other places - non design stuff could just have an “OT” - off topic, flag/suffix.

Who can expect surfers to really play by the rules.

The topics I thought had nothing to do to with construction/design were things like “happy birthday”, “I’ve heard that”, “what him say” etc. If you want to discuss shaping without a machine etc - go ahead. Perhaps space is an issue for storage of e-mails but I’m never a fan of censorship .
