THRUST..if you surf...get this book or go home

if you do not make the effort to own and read this book, you have no place being on this forum in the future…it is that basic!

Rocky…buy it, read it, get it…or F$&K off

your a hard bastard Rock, I got an invite to the launch a few days ago, I thought , no way , can't possibly go, I booked a flight tonight, so will you come up and say hello?

Harry,

Word is THRUST is well launched and sailing under a stiff breeze from the shores of torquay some time back…if there be a second sailing, then that would be a mighty event for a deckhand to be keelhauled, hoisted and thrusted once again.

Scuttle me buckets…dude, will ya  flight o fancy tickle ye 'ol quest for shellfish…or will it be a quest of the selfish swan ??

ARRRR, Rocky, the plank awaits ye salty bastard…step an ye will see!

The Sands, Narrabeen , for those without Rocks local Knowledge, so tell me mate , Torquay or the Local?

no fucken dude

Rocky.  Ha ha…always love your post. I wish I knew what " thrust " was.   I was doing some research in the same theme before leaving for work this morning.  I try and do that type of research at least twice a day.

Solo,

good to hear from you…sorry I assumed people had heard about THRUST, a new book just released all about Simon Anderson and the whole Thruster story as is the 30 year anniversary of the Thruster invention.

The book and all about it can be obtained from www.Coastalwatch.com and here is a cut and paste below to wet the taste buds.

Essential reading and great photo, probably one of the best books ever, particularly for Sways types who dig board design, shaping and ever owned a Thruster

Rocky rates it a 5/5

Thrust - Part 1
**Thrust is the biography of one of Australian surfing’s most revered figures, Simon Anderson, published to commemorate the 30th anniversary of his design breakthrough, the three-fin Thruster. Co-authored by Simon and Tim Baker, with additional stories by Phil Jarratt, Terry Fitzgerald, Derek Hynd, Andrew Kidman, Hugh McLeod, Reggae Elliss, this is the one surfing book every surfer should own.**

Over 200 pages and lavishly illustrated with photos by Hugh McLeod, Bruce Channon, Frank Pithers, Jeff Divine, Peter Simons, Mick McCormack, Dan Merkel, Flame and many more, it is an historic record of a ground-shifting era in surfing.

In October 1980, struggling with small waves on the fledgling pro tour, Simon Anderson stuck three fins on a surfboard and changed surfing forever.

Now, for the first time, Simon tells the whole remarkable story of how a kid from Collaroy graduated to Narrabeen and then took on the surfing world.

From the wild early days at Northy, to raucous road trips to Bells and Margaret River,  from pioneering Hawaiian missions to his historic wins at Bells and Surfabout.

Simon’s story neatly mirrors the evolution of modern surfing - from longboards to short, singles to twins to thrusters, Aussie Titles  to the pro tour. Still in demand as a shaper to the world’s best surfers, Simon continues to influence the course of surfing history.

“I wanted to make my equipment really good so when I went out there I’d surf really good, and if I surfed really good, when I came in I’d be really happy. Then I’d go down the pub and celebrate with a few really good mates. That was kind of the cycle, and it was a good cycle and it lasted for years.” - Simon Anderson.

“Simon Anderson’s a hell of a lot more important to surfing than those three fins. I think he was one of the absolute greatest surfers of all time, in any era.”  - Wayne Lynch.

Tell us about your thruster.

Howzit rock, $50 for any book is just a little pricy for me and I don't thelast time I have seen a book that cost that much. I can get a whole years subscription of Surers Journel for that much. I think they would sell a lot more if the price was around $25-$30. I am not a cheap skate but a realist when it comes to buying things. Aloha,Kokua

Kokua,

Yep it ain’t cheap…but it ain’t no ordinary book and as word has it, Simon will get a benefit from it which does fill the bill of the “dollar for every thruster you have owned” gig that was going around some years back.

There is in fact a limited edition leather bound ‘300 only’ available for $300 which is being snapped up, so the $5o is a deal in my mind. This is the history of the biggest change in surfing history and has contributions from many of the worlds best surfers, shapers, photographers and icons…a really good and interesting piece of surfing history

Rocky

I’ll be buying it , I think.

Btw , Kokua  I get the impression that price is in Aussie dollars - ( but as I write I’ve realized the Aussie dollar’s worth more than the US at the moment isn’t it ? )

What I liked about Simon in my formative years was , he wasn’t some big talking blow hard or a half-pie hippy spouting pseudo cosmic BS  -  just an ordinary bloke, who happened to have outstanding talent .

My perspective from the 22nd row , anyway.

hey Nuc,

How many Thrusters have you had ??

Acknowledged as one of the greatest surfers/shapers of out time, or ever…if you can make the purchase, read the history and feel part of what will never again be repeated and take in that extreme level of Simons contribution to our culture and our enjoyment of our sport by a guy that gave it to us for free, then it is simple…get the book or just go home!    surfing does not need wingers, tight arses or freeloaders…it is not a donation to a charity…it is , however a brilliant collection of photos and stories that no surfer should be without as a mark of self attribution as a member of a very unique tribe on this planet.

Rock your piece of history and pay your Thruster dues

can you imagine my confusion…

I prefer single fins… guess you can’t teach old dogs new tricks.

But I would like to read the book just the same.  Is it released in AU only?

Retrothis,

Hey that is too funny, Simon sure looks different on this cover…and that is more a TWINNY than a THRUSTER right there.

But the tag line prolly still works…“THE REMARKABLE STORY OF ONE MAN’S QUEST FOR SPEED”

Well… ROCKY MY SOCKS

Bg…are you really one of the Bg’s??..stayin alive…stayin alive…

Dunno, is my answer, but pretty sure they would ship it any place in this global day and age. Go to www.coastalwatch.com and see if their ordering system will ship internationally…other wise better buy the other Thrust book above about Twinny’s

Rocky…not exactly yer fountain of knowledge, but…stayin alive…stayin alive

I am at home

a dollar ain’t enough.
