just looking at these fins on the true aims web site and wondering if they are glassed and ready to go or are you just paying $76 for the “the real thing”, ie. the name… foiling the wood part of wood fins is the easy part…
I hear alot of guys saying.“too much money I can make them myself” I have seen the ones they make themselvesand they are no where near the same quality.
You can make them yourself. Probably not as good, of course. But, the more you make the better they get. You can buy two sheets of 4x8 ply for the cost of one set and make hundreds of them. I might buy a set anyway. They sure look nice. Mike
yah i am sure they are nice BUT are they just the ply or are they are glassed??? i just think it would be funny if they were selling just ply wood fins @ that price not glassed, since they are not even half finished if they are just the ply???
Aloha! I came from Sunset Cliffs long ago. Geppy has been making fish fins since Stevie first started shaping fishes. Definitely, no question about the design and quality. As far as I remember, the fins were glassed. He still sends fins over here to Steve, but I haven’t really checked any of them recently. For authentic Lis Fish fins, these are the ones. Aloha…RH
I just ordered a set. I’d be surprised if they were not glassed. Usually, you buy a fin set ready to install. No big deal if they are not. Just glass em. Actually, might be better if they were not glassed since I will probably put them on an eps/epoxy fish sometime and would like the resins to be as compatable as possible. Gephart’s were pretty hard to get. Good news that we can get them from True Ames.
The UPS guy delivered my fins today. Yes they are laminated and yes they are beautifully foiled. I thought my ply keels were getting better, but as usual, hold them up to a pro’s and there is a big difference. I’ve got a looooong way to go. Something to shoot for. I’ve got a big piece of baltic birch plywood, too. If you enjoy making and surfing Lis type fishes you should definately get a set or two of the Gephart’s. The photos do not do them justice. Mike
Something not mentioned is that Geppy uses a nice high grade “marine” ply that you won’t really find at homey depot. That’s why they’re a bit pricey and take a while to get…
True statement concerning the Homey Cheepo plywood. There’s a big difference in quality between the HC stuff and the quality cabinet scraps I get from my friend. Lots of voids and splintering with the cheap stuff. My Doc’s acid splash keels work killer, my the way. Mike
