Hey woody, one more question… once you lam, and it kicks and hardens and the deed is done… can you then lam a clear layer over it? Like two seperate steps.
sure you can but if it's one piece then it's not necessary It'll just add weight.
Xander,
What’s up with your project? Been out of town for a couple days…just wondering how things are coming?
I just got the supplies in today. I am building some new saw-horses and getting everything together before i start. My dad always told me that a project’s success is determined before you start. Guess its jut my anal-retentiveness kicking in… hah.
I will be posting pictures with every step. I will start a new thread called “Joe’s Board”. That is my cousin and well… its his board.
I did have a wild hair the other day of doing, my planned, a tint on bottom and a fabric inlay on top. But im thinking, the more steps, the more likely i am to eff somthing up. Here is where i got the idea.
Awesome! Yeah planning is everything for sure. Looking forward to seeing how things turn out! Just Laminated my HWS will post a couple pics on “What are you working on” thread.
Good Luck!
Woody, that looks fantanstic man. Outstanding! Good on you man. I will post pictures as soon as I get started.
Alright guys, just for the sake of ease Im going to post the new board on this thread. I attempted making my own template but it might have thrown me off a little bit. One of my rails is a little cockeyed. Oh well, number three is shaped. I will lam the bottom tomorrow morning and the top tomorrow afernoon, after class.
Xander, how wide is the wide point on that board? Reason is you might have enough width to save it. One of my first boards ended up with a very irregular rail line on one side. I fixed it by slowing down and perfecting my template. Pulled in the whole plan shape 3/4 of an inch and saved it. Board turned out really good and whole lot better than leaving it.
Hey, woody. Just measured it. Says about 21 3/4. Definately a little play room. You think I should just leave it and learn from it or try and correct it?
Your call man…but that shape…you could fix your template…pull it in 1/2" each side and correct your outline. Part of this deal is learning to fix your mistakes. If it was mine I’d fix it.
Gosh man, i am tempted to try and fix it. The only thing i am worried about is my cousin paid for the materials because its his board. I didnt really want to do it to begin with for this reason… I am going to sleep on it. It is a six five now, he said that he wouldnt mind it being a little shorter. If it were you, would you trace the outline on the good side of the board and then use that as a template for the other side? Or should i try and go make a template from a board at a shop or something?
It's hard to tell from the photo but the left side looks good. Trace the outline of the left side and flip it to the right to see if you can tune it up or if you'll need to cut the rail line again. What did you make your template from, i.e., what kind of material; cardboard, hardboard, paper??? and do you still have it??
I made the template out of really thin plywood. Like some veneer but the template was from scratch. i didnt trace a board orignally. I like the idea of tracing the left side. Im going to try that. Next board I do, i will spend more effort on the template.
Check your PM.
Alright woody, here we go. Im going to put these pictures on a new thread too for other people to see.
I followed you advice to a tee and went straight to Home Depot. I sheet of 4x8 Masonite ripped into 4 sheets. Some spray adhesive and a little patience. Went to blendingcurves.com and found a 6’0" x 21" egg and just stretched it out three inches to appease my cousin.
I am going to take a jig to it tomorrow morning before class and hopefully correct my shape tomorrow in the PM.
What do you think of the template so far?
I'm no angel, God help me please....I belive we can make this work....We need some time to sit back and reflect.....
.........so.... is this a painting question or a resin question or a template question?...................or a shaping question?
No way on earth would I even think of glueing down little scraps of paper to make a template!....and the board is already shaped....
....Lighting bolt from God to Stingray...OUCH! >>>>Sorry God, that hurt..can you lessen the voltage? I just want to help the guy but he's going to spend 20+ hours making a fagking template.......for a board that's already shaped......
Thank you God...I love you man....too much crazy stuff to deal with....we'll get it...thanks for your help with my new Longboard...............Ray............
Ray,
I love your sense of humor man, truly. Keeps everything light. If you look closely at the board I shaped, the rail is a bit cock-eyed and I really just dont feel right giving this board to my cousin with it like that. Truth be told, he would probably never know any difference but unfortunately I will be surfing with him whenever he is in town. My be my anal retentiveness but whatever. So last night, while staring at the board pondering what to do, I had a vision from God that was was ever so enlightening. He said.....
Him: Hey haole boy! Go to blendingcurves.com and get chu one of them supa sick templates to fix dat rickaty stik.
Me: Really good, I dont know about all that techno stuff. Shouldn't I make something that is orignal and awesome.
Him: No, you stupid little one. Save the originality for when you are a great shapa.
Me: Ok, God. Whatever you say.
So long story short, Im going to take some advice from a new friend and make my cousin something nicer then what already exist. I would hate to put money and time into something that I am niether proud of nor comfortable to giving away. By giving I mean he paid for the materials and my payment is the experience gained from the whole mess.
I do apologize for the topic change. The original questions was with concern to resin tinting or using acrylic paints but the focus has switched a little.
I will continue to post pictures of my progress and am open to suggestions from all.
Ray, im not sure if you have posted on some of my other topics so if you have, thank you greatly for any support you provided not only to me but to this website. Shaping and glassing would be a great deal more costly and challenging without the "swaylockian" community.

Alright, Im back with an update.
I lam’d the bottom tonight with decent success. I taped with good 3M tape, the chemical solvent resistant tape. I also used the basting technique to prevent bleeding. I mixed up about 30oz of blue tinted resin and about 20oz of red tinted resin just for safety. I definately could have done with a lot less but I am still plenty new at this whole game.

Any advice for correcting my incorrectly cut nose and tail. The tail lap is less severe then the nose lap. What I was planning on doing was going back, taping the lap again, sand down till smooth and re-glass with my resin. I have some extra resin left over that I stored in a UV proof box. Both blue and red. I could use that to correct my mistkes.
Xander ,you are the greatest.
swaylocks is proud to have spawned such a collaboration.
this thread is a document for the time capsule that you can open years from now when you know stuff.
this board is a soul monster congratulations on your inquisitivness, inspiration and tenacity.
…ambrose…
are those the towels
for me when I borrow
your towel at the beach?
YYYYYYAAAAAAAAAAAHHWWWWWHHHHOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
Hey man turned out pretty good cept for the gaps in the lap at the nose. Good thing you saved that resin. I would gently knock off any "spurs" and tape/cutlap as you suggested...then make some small patches that will just fill those voids. You could then maybe put a couple of strips over the front 8-10 inches just to give the color some symmetry. Just little patches will work though. I like how the two colors blended looks like you got close to what you wanted.
