Did this dude deserved to get beat up? NO He could have simply left the scene all of this stuff would have been avoided. But he didn’t use his “common sense”. First off the water patrol is telling you to leave so he should have simply left. Next you have a well known body boarder/surfer coming at you telling you to leave so what do you do? Talk crap and get in a fight??? That doesn’t make sense. If Kainoa McGee was coming at me I would be asking him for an autograph.
You see all types of movies and TV shows with local hawaiians being in the North Shore intimidate and being territorial. I remember a some reality surf show on TV that showed Sunny Garcia punch some dude up because dude was staring at his wife. Either this dude does not watch any TV or just doesn’t care or is not knowledgeable. I think this dude put all this stuff on himself.
Wait a minute! Localism is much worse in So Cal. Windnsea, Swamis, Sunset Cliffs. I’ve seen all that crap here. We all have seen that crap. We have more surfers per sq in, than any other place on the planet. I surf Windnsea to Sunset Cliffs, I think of myself as a breezer, I’m not a real local anywhere, but everybody at those spots know my face. I don’t cause trouble, but I certainly don’t back away from it.
If everybody took responsibility for there own actions and didn’t worry about what the other guy was doing, we’d all be better off. We know what’s right and wrong, and we have choices. Movie Jackass made the wrong decision. Nothing pisses off a crowded line up more than some guy that thinks he’s the hottest ripping thing in the water, non-smiling, paddling to the top of the line up, wave hog, testerone man. There’s a reason why we send the 18-24 yr olds to war…they think there bullet proof. Relax and just have a good time surfing, smile, let a wave go to the girl on the inside, let the old guy on the longboard take the set wave.
Heres a word or wisdom: Don’t be a JACKASS. Be consious of your surroundings, assimilate into the culture. Trust me that guy would have gotten the same beating at Windnsea or Sunset Cliffs for dropping in on one of the “hotheaded” locals. Just like if you walk into a bar looking for a fight, more than likely there’s going to be someone willing to ablige.
without getting into the semantics of respect and common sense… would those aggressors have handled things the same way if say - johnny boy or laird were out there?? the wolves took down a much weaker game. The haole deserved a smack but not to the extent of the situation.
Getting respect from the Hawaiians is not that hard.Back in the 1960’s I used to surf a place called Sand Island on Oahu.It was strictly locals (even the locals were scared of em LOL).Haoles were never seen.I started paddling out and would grab boards before they hit the rocks and stayed on the shoulder. After a couple of sessions Stanley Parks (who was the alpha male) came over and shook my hand and called me “one local Haole”.I was still at the learning stage and pretty much of a Kook at that time.Respect gains respect. Its quite simple. RB
I've Known Kala since he was about 2 and he's always been very respectful towards me. What a lot of people don't know is that Kala and his brother Kamalei have been orphans since their mother died in 1991 in our hundred year flood. That has had a very bad effect on Kala since he was very close to his mom and he still has a hard time dealing with her death.
What did the guy think would happen by paddleing into a contest line-up, that the contestants would just say “sure take any waves you want, it’s only a contest”. This guy was either the dumbest person or just doesn’t know about respect, but I’m sure he gets the point now. I’ve seen a lot worst things happen and sounds like you have to, so this dumb haole is actually lucky that he was able to sit on the beach instead of going to the Kahuku hospital.
aloha Kokua
It is too bad that Kala lost his mother during his formative years on Kauai, but that is no excuse for his thuggish behavior on the NS or anywhere else. And that is the bottom line.
As someone mentioned earlier in this thread, the “dumb” haole you cite was bi-polar and off his meds, which would explain his odd behavior.
I know of repeat offenses such as this committed by Kala, in which traveling surfers’ boards are taken from them up to the Volcom house, and the surfers are taunted to come up and retrieve them. When they do come up to get the board that is rightfully theirs, these kauai guys jump them. i.e. this is no solitary incident. And there is no excuse for such behavior. I don’t care if he lost his mother – a lot of us have experienced loss and we don’t walk around looking to start this kind of stuff.
So after watching the video, and reading the story that Daklaw posted, my question is not just to you but to everybody who things that this should not have happened, what should have been done ? I mean he threw the first punch, what did he and everybody else think would happen, just a few slaps ? There is plenty of Aloha over there, one just has to know how to receive it and even more, give it back. Just like Jay said you have to watch yourself and know how to act when over there. Now I have read that he MIGHT have been off his meds, if thats the case and it is true then that might be a differant story. I do not know any or know much about bi-polar, but even without his meds, after the first ass kicking which he started, wouldn’t one have the common sense to get the hell out off dodge ?
Howzit Frank, Off his meds, seems like he’s resposable for taking his meds, that’s why a doctor prescribes them to bi-polar people. He should be aware of what happens when not on his meds, so he is responsable for his actions and the consequences. If he had been on his meds, the whole scene probably would’ve never happened. Maybe this will teach him to follow his doctors orders. Aloha,Kokua
Im not 100% guys but I’m pretty sure that the guy was on ice. In tracks a few months ago they had a special edition on drugs and they said this guy was off his nut when he was doing this. Ill go check…ok, so i found the story.
here it goes -
“Ice is smoked and produces an instant feeling of agression and euphoria, producing a special kind of idiot…” it goes on; “the north shore of oahu can be a pretty volatile place at the best of times, but add a sprinkling of ice freaks around the place the frying pan can become the fire. Just how bullet proof does this stuff make you? One guy, allegedly wired on the stuff, last year paddled into the lineup at Pipline during the annual body boarding contest, intent on surfing it regardless. Obvlivious to the warngings of the water patrolhe wouldnt leave. He was eventualy set upon in the water by an irate local, washed in, then set upon once he hit the beach. He got up with his nose where his ear used to be, picked up the two halves of the board, and walked away like nothing had happened.”
Sorry about the spelling and grammatical errors, but you get the point. From the looks of what happened, and the effects of the drug, it sounds like he was tweaked. That was from August 2004 tracks, who are a creditable magazine.
First of all who here enjoys the fact that these surf contests take over every major Northshore spot every weekend during “the season”. No other place has this much “professional” activity during it’s prime season. If you’re in the contest sure its great but most contestants don’t live even here.
What should’ve happened…
Waterpatrol should’ve taken control of the situation and dragged the guy out of the water, Geez the guy’s on a jet ski… So what do they do? Coax Kainoa to do their dirty work?
At least Kainoa had the balls to try and do what security should’ve done in the first place… Ever try and get on stage at a rock concert when they don’t want you too? Well that’s what sould’ve happened here.
Kala and the wolfpack boys were just cherry picking after the fact.
The real question is why him?
Cause he was a stupid skinny haole boy by himself?
I don’t see Kala or Kainoa or any of the wolfpack paddling up to Peter Cole, Senator Fred Hemmings or the other oldtimers at sunset or waimea and tell them to get out of the line up during a contest. They’d normally just tell them to F-off. pretty funny when you think about it.
Bottomline is these guys pick on the people they interpret as weak who they know won’t create real consequences.
Let’s say the guy was a hispanic with no teeth and oodles of prison tattoos including several tear drops by his eyes… I’m sure the wiseguys would think twice about calling him out.
It’s just surf bullyism at it’s worse. It happens all the time and everywhere there’s more people than waves…But it should never happen at a professionally managed contest.
So after watching the video, and reading the story that Daklaw posted, my question is not just to you but to everybody who things that this should not have happened, what should have been done ? I mean he threw the first punch, what did he and everybody else think would happen, just a few slaps ? Again this was a pro event with security, they easily could have just called the cops OR escort him off the beach. If you have ever been to those events you know there are some large bruddahs that could easily have controlled him/sat on him/removed him/held him till the cops came…whatever. The promoters could lose their ass in a lawsuit.
If you apply the term ‘disrespect’ to the californian surfer’s inflammatory actions in the water, you must issue the following caveat: you know, understand, and follow whatever synaptic firings were going on inside his head. Proceeding from the assumption that he was bipolar and off his meds, you can’t assume that the guy was thinking along the lines of logic and reason that most people are accustomed to. I am bipolar and have lived for many years off of my medication in the past, resulting in some harmful behavior. Impersonating and challenging navy seals during and outside of a concert, I disrespected a group of about 4 or 5 no-necked bulldogs just because I got the idea in my head to act as if I was a seal myself. No punch was thrown because it was obvious I was crazy.
To assume that this guy disrespected kala and the wolf pack would then allow that the guy disrespected kala’s right hand – if he knowingly disobeyed contest and north shore protocol – because he would be aware that the wolves would descend on him and punish his actions in the water. Didn’t he know that kala would have to kick his ass, since kala (and the real victim, his right hand) understood his role in the enforcement of policy over…waves? Bringing up disrespect here is like saying the suicide who walked in front of the city bus disrespected the green light.
Ocean waves? Is that what this is all about? We are not in the midst of a drug turf war in rio de janeiro’s city of god? The most beautiful form of recreation should not be left pure; let’s volcomize from the beach surfers that dropped in on prostituted pros…
Second to last of the bottom line is that even if the californian’s actions were motivated by some form of cultural dyslexia, the sponsoring reason that he was out in the water was because he was mentally instable.
maybe this wouldn’t have escalated if the lifeguards did their jobs and fulfilled their duties to the city and county by safeguarding the life of the californian. or were they following orders themselves?
Got to agree with you there. Who ever was responsible for security at the event should have taken care of the situation, in a professional manner, before it got out of control. Thats what they get paid for, otherwise why have them?
I have heard of the blonde guy b4, as he grew up in Texas. He is an AWESOME surfer.
Kala’s reaction was pathetic. He should have never done what he did. I mean my god one punch is enough. He should have realized the blonde guy was not all together and therefore should have treated the scene in a different way.
The reaction of the people on the shore was just gay. Somebody should have tried to stop it. Whoever was in charge of the event did a horrible job. Like other posters said this was a Pro contest. There were lifeguards there. (Notice how one of the lifegaurds asked if he was ok after he got beat up. What kind of CRAP is this!) some one should have called the cops or something.
And why in the hell would anyone break a good board on purpose. THat is absolutely freaking retarded. At least give it to an orphanage man or some kid who doesnt have a board.
That guy who did the beating up needs to think before he acts. If he continues to act like that his actions will eventually get him in trouble and he’ll regret it.
