I heard they closed off registrations for a while over there… dunno what the story is now. I guess they wouldn’t really, cos numbers mean world domination.
I’ve made about 10 posts over there, its not much fun if actually making surfboards is your thing…
Arguing, complete with blows below the belt is kosher, as is chopping anyone and everyone off at the knees. But, at the same time, THAT is your market. If you are peddling wares, its the place to be.
Complete with peanut gallery critiques, oh hell yeah.
Hints of the madness are appearing here more than a few years ago, and i’m a newbie compared to many on this site. At least here there’s a moderating majority.of people who actually just wanna talk about surf…
Not knocking the 'erBB too much, but it is hectic.
The way I see it, is that these places are like a house-party with open invite: There’s the person who owns the place, and has his close knit club of friends over. There’s the sluts that tag along, the geeks trying to be cool, the stoners bonging up out the back, the guy pushing flyers for the latest club down the road, your average dude who’s there to have a good time, and the wanker who’s gotta start something or else he feels unimportant. The longest keg stand gets applause, as does the best cocktail mixed. Its an art don’t ya know. The one wailing on the guitar claims soul, as does the guy who has been brewing his own booze from the 60’s.
Yeah man, the design forum over there is FILLED to the brim with these super negative know it alls. Greg Griffin posts there a lot though showing off his boards, thats the plus!
Well, if you’ve seen an issue of the magazine recently you are probably aware of how sloppy that whole operation has become. I think Severson should take legal action that forces them to change the name. I know it’s not possible.
But, anyone who read that magazine in the 60s and even into the 70s knows that it has gone downhill to the point of being unreadable. Bunch of borderline illiterates who can’t even research simple historical facts.
I can remember back in the 1960’s waiting at the mailbox for the new Surfer to come. It was like a major moment in my life. I would call my Bros and they would all run over to my house to scope it out.I guess things have changed eh?
"is it that big corporate companies are killing it, eg. lack of : care, knowledge, understanding, surfing ?..........or is the internet driving it under ?"
It isn't the internet. My opinion is it's nearly 30 years of manufactured product. Diluting the gene pool? Not that far. The so-called "glory years" of 'Er (and 'Ing for that matter) reflected content from the readers as much as for them. Once they went monthly and started covering pro surfing contests and subsequently jacking up expenses they had to control their output, to make sure they had mega-content every month. Overall content went from Springsteen to Spears...
In recent years other magazines have sprung up more reflective of the real experience. As to the 'Er forum, I'll spare you all my thoughts, although Herb I'd suggest trying it to see if you are able to post even though you have no confirmation. I can't imagine they would try to keep anyone at bay.
Did you get the first email saying you signed up Herb?
I tried it - got an email immediately to click on to have my registration confirmed, so I did, well it was a week or so before I got the email saying my registration had been confirmed, by then I’d given up, after reading too much of the “FU”, “You suck” “Hey buddy” circle jerk type of stuff…
Pretty sure that is the right email address - Zach@surfermag.com (that’s the address that eventually sends you the approval anyway). You should get an immediate confirmation email when signing up as well. And, I think you have to confirm within 24 hours (otherwise, your account goes dead).
Totally different types of people/posts over there - I signed up just to be able to PM someone about a board for sale.
As pro surfing became the prominent focus of the surf media, they became more of an advertising vehicle for the big dollar clients, and less a reflection of surfing as the average joe experiences it. There were many unsubstantiated stories about certain brands buying the cover shot, and also rumors about pressure to include photos where certain logos were visible.
In the past decade, there’s been a real dumbing down of the writing. A former online editor was one of the worst writers I’ve ever witnessed. He had no business being a writer, let alone an editor. He should stick to promoting events
Bad analogy, IMO. Both are just symbols of corporate “product”. They just cater to different audiences.
anyway… they screen users… I just tried and got the confirmation email, clicked the link and am now waiting for “administrator aproval”. I know someone who has been trying to get a username for a LOOOONG time and cant, despite trying on different computers, using different aliases, from different states. Either they have a really bad bug in their system or a retarded screening process, or both.
Supposedly the online editor Scott Bass has left his position. He would have to “approve” your registration and sometimes had to close registration because the site gets hacked. Very kooky message board, though some cool people post there amongst the trolls and anonymous jokers…
