where to surf dec/jan?

hey guys, ive maybe got the option of taking 4-6 weeks off work starting about the 20th december and want to head off surfing!

need some helpful suggestions though…

ive got a camper and more than a few boards so a trip from uk heading down through france(stopping by to see balsa!) through spain and portugal could be a good option but for the money id pay could get me somewhere very exotic so any of you sway brothers out there got any suggestions? camping/cheap would be preferable and im also considering hooking up with a local shaper to shape me a custom fto pick up when i arrive!

i usually surf uk beach breaks with the odd reef and also had few trips to morrocco. confident to just over head high and ride short and long boards

also would like consistency so i can surf as much as possible

cheers

hello

what is your budget?

hey there wouter,

budget is probably £1000 all in

any thoughts?

wow, not a lot, best bet would be canary islands, and sleep near the break, flights from uk are cheap in january, expensive in december, christmas + new year and all

driving is defo NOT an option.

Morocco could be good too... if you sleep near break

Or really southern part of portugal, there should be a good portugese shaper around that area.... maybe sleep in car? and sometimes shower? Portugal is relatively cheap to eat and sleep, but gasoline is not, spain is... so maybe most southern part of spain too, rent stationwagon?

im off now!

while it might not seem like a huge amount of money wouter i think it should be enough, 2 weeks in morrocco with car, food and room usually sets me back about £350 and im prepared to rough it a little bit. should have mentioned though £1000 does not include the cost of the board.

ive just been looking at flights and i can fly to southern california for £450! if car hire isnt too pricey i could rent one and sleep in that? what do you reckon?

fuck yeah! i would do it… you can rent campers there too!! just look it up on the web, no car, camper!

wow, yeah, california in winter, dont know about the wheather, but waves should be great

get yourselves a coil shaped up, 650$ i believe, and a little for shipping, say 75?

725 dollars, a BARGAIN for us europeans, i actually own two, and recommend you get one too!! especially if you over there, saves HUGE tax import costs…

It’s only a pitty that the UK didn’t join the euro.

Now the pound is weak too!

@ wouter, Brittisch people don’t like to be called europeans. For them europeans are the ones on the mainland. :stuck_out_tongue:

I’d suggest staying in europe, there are some worldclass breaks here and in winter they’re not as crowded as california.

(Never been in california, but I think they’re crowded)

That’s fine with me. Just drop me a PM.

Wow. You guys are tossing around surfing in France, Spain, Portugal, and CALIFORNIA in the same paragraph?  The surf is good here that time of year, but it is crowded and accomodations are expensive.  Plus, there's no adventure here unless you want a tour of South Central or even good old Salinas.  Just don't wear red or blue.  Mike

I’d take South Central over Salinas any day…

cheers Balsa ill keep you posted!

cheers Rooster,

the more im thinking about this the more im thinking of flying somewhere and maybe buying a cheap van when i get there to travel/sleep in which i could then sell on when im leaving. Im real keen on surfing somewhere most days and meeting folks to hang around with and soak up the stoke. id even be happy to sweep shop some days for guys in order to talk shop!

dont quite understand the red and blue thing tho?

dog

there is no surf in california

Hi afoaf,

Yah, South Central is probably safer.  I think Salinas is up to 19 murders so far this year. Sad and  pathetic.

Hi surfingdog,

The color thing was a lame attempt at humor. Sorry.  Blue and Red are gang colors.  Wearing the wrong color in the wrong neighborhood can get you killed.  If you come to California let me know.  I'm in Monterey Co. in central California.  It's a very safe neighborhood. We'll surf, talk boards, drink a coldie, etc. Mike

I reckon thats plenty of cash to have a good time for 4 -6 weeks!

I think you should look at somewhere more exotic, just a bit of investigation. There’s plenty of awesome waves in Indo during the “off season”…

Sri Lanka is great, and I doubt the troubles there affect the tourists, they proably need the tourist dollars more than ever.

Canaries are a good call, but i’d probably get bored after 6 weeks there. But then again, It would be super chilled to hang out on Fuerte Ventura for that long. Like living on the moon, that place is unreal!!!

And you might get a chance to score this - europe best waves apparently. I gazed over at the island every day when I was there, but there just wasn’t enough swell. Some day…

cheers Mike that sounds perfect.

can you recommend any good places for camping that are safe and chilled, whats big sur like?

cheers

cheers KK,

i have looked at indo, sri lanka and stuff but i reckon that will wait for another time, and the canaries id like to maybe do with several long weekends as its easy to pick up cheap flights for like £80-100.

im looking for a roadtrip type adventure i guess which is why driving through europe or heading to usa seems favourite. ive been to morrocco for last 5yrs so africa needs a break too.

or what about australia? or would i need longer?

from lax to venice beach is about 45 minutes and will set you back one dollar and change on the big blue bus. Go to the cadillac hotel and tell a guy named sris you want to work for a bunk for three weeks. Malibu just up the pch. Couple hostels around there also.

It may not be as exotic as Morrocco or Canaries but …

Venice is quite a circus usually and always lots of people to meet when you aren’t in the water. Loads of good boards and the accent will work for you with the gals.

… just a thought.

I think you don't really have enough money for California. Malibu does not break in the winter. San Diego or Santa Barbara area would be nice, (if there is a swell) Big Sur is gorgeous but likely to be stormy and rainy during Dec.  After airfare you wil have about $1200.00 US?  That will last about two weeks in California, if you are careful.  Unless you can find someone to put you up for free, and maybe borrow a car...
