Who makes the best Noserider?

I am 205 pounds, six feet tall, and am wondering who makes the best noserider. I have made a couple boards myself, but I want to treat myself to something really nice, a name brand like Velzy, Weber, Iron Cross, Hobie, Harbour, Yater, etc. I want to avoid 50-50 rails and pintails. Other than that, I want something that can easily take my weight on the nose. I surf Cardiff Reef, Swamis, Lower Trestles, Windansea (a little), Tamarack, and occasionally Rincon, places with fast waves. I also plan to surf (for the first time) Malibu this summer. I am not really worried about turning ability, as I usually only longboard in head high and under surf. I just want the best for noseriding. Any suggestions?

talk to a shaper tell him what you want and you will get it .

Harbours “19” is a great classic style noserider.

Fairmont Were I you, I’d take a ride over to 583 Westlake St. in Encinitas and hook up with Jim Phillips. He’ll make you one hell of a “custom” noserider suited to your size & style. Every board I’ve ever got from Jim, and I have 3, have been of the highest quality and they just flat-ass work !!! I couldn’t recommend him enough !!

Mike Slingerland in Encinitas is a fantastic longboard shaper as well. I’d like to get longboards from Jim Phillips, Mike Slingerland and Bill Shrosbee. That would be a sweet trifecta of tip time.

What I meant to ask was, "Who makes the best NAME BRAND noserider. I already have two longboards and a couple others I shaped myself. I don’t really want custom this time. In my 34 years, I haven’t ever bought a board off the rack. Every board I ever owned (except my first board, a Doyle) was custom made. This time I want to buy off the rack, just this once. And I want a Big name brand, like Velzy, Weber, Hobie, Harbour, August, Takayama, etc. It isn’t for prestige. I don’t want to show off. It’s for me. So, who (of those guys and other big name brands) makes the best noserider for a 200 pound guy. I just want to avoid 50-50 rails.

Fairmont- try this link for fun. The Swaylocks archives are a treasure… http://www.swaylocks.com/cgi-bin/discussion/archive.cgi?review=14969 Dale

This is easier… just use the “Search Swaylocks” function and enter: Re: Best All-time Noserider? Con Ugly or Bing Nuuhiwa Noserider?

Although I havent ridden one, from what you say youre looking for in a board, tip riding and no 50/50 rails, how about the Takayama noserider? It has low soft turned down rails, the classic teardrop nose concave. Only thing is I’m quite sure it has a rounded pin tail. I dont know about other brands, but seems like a lot of them like the Joel Tudor Nuuhiwa Noserider, Cooperfish, Harbour 19, all have 50/50 rails. If youre looking for a board for just noseriding, Ive heard and read that a 50/50 rail is best for tip riding. Good luck, I hope you find what youre looking for.

Harbour makes a board called the Sano. Although this board (in my opinion) sucks at Sano, it is an unbelieveable point surf nose rider due to its reverse rocker. There have been a lot of other Name Brand Models with similar “reverse” rockers. Sluggo

Go to the Robert August Longboard Shop, Harbour and Surf Ride. Between those tthree you should stumble onto a great nose rider. I’m pretty sure you’ll need the 50-50 rails to get a good one.

WOW!! Dale you remember that one? I posted that one year ago and it turned out to be very informative and nostalgic!!! I’m in San Diego County still surfing with arguably some of the best Noseriders in the world i.e. Tudor, Connelly,Ethings,Hanson,Paskowitz, etc. and still don’t see any CON UGLIES!!! Someone needs to market that thing!! It would sell!! Call it a FUGLY, SNUGLY, SMUGLY, HO-DADLY. Lots of Nuuhiwa Bing clones though! The Boss longboards are the most unusual along that vein, never rode one though.

Surfhungry, I`m rapidly approaching the half-century mark, but I still have my memory! Yes… that was a great thread… worth revisiting and continuing. Dale

I’m a big old guy, I love my Lance Carsons. Thou they have the 50/50 rails that you don’t want. They are not just nose riders but you can sure get some tip time on them. I would sure give him a try. www.lancecarson.com

Holmsey Sidewinder. Best I ever tried. Couldn’t do a damn thing with it but noseride.

Greg… Did those “cnts”—“slits” in the rails of the sidewinder do the same thing as the Fins sticking out of the side that was asked about eariler??? My first board was a Holmsey Noserider with the Big "speed skeg " they called it . Maybe this guy should your trim explanation…Aloha

The Sidewinder had anti-wings in the tail that scooped water onto the deck holding the tail down. The tail was also concave. Fins on the rails on those other boards are to provide drive which they do quite well. This is apposed to the Sidewinder which redirected water onto the deck specifically for noseriding.

Tom Hale Surfboards, “Terry Jones Noserider”. The design is currently available although the label is long gone. This was the design Terry Jones surfed into first place in the Ventura Noseriding Contest.

Guy Takayama! (Donald’s nephew)
