Why are Most Styro Blanks so Expensive?

DPS, American, etc. 6 to under 7’ …#2 density, are always around $85, $90. Pretty steep if you ask me. Really makes the old Clark 62C $50 blank, look good. Why is styro so much more than PU of the same size??

The better EPS foams have longer cycle times and stay in the molds longer for better bead fusion and so they cost more. Prices vary between blank manufacturers…

Right now all blanks are expensive. Urethane isn’t any cheaper. Things will settle out in time but I doubt you’ll see blanks as cheap as Clark again.

Sorry but PU is cheaper as stated in my first post…

just make your own

its not that hard

if you buy your foam in bulk and hotwire it

i can cut a blank in about 15 min and im really primative setup

my blanks cost me under 40 dollars nz

in fact i can get one hotwired professionly for not much more

maybe if you found the someone outside the surfboard industry

youd get a much better deal

hell a pu blank cost 140$nz here

i can almost make a whole board for that

Your paying $50 a blank? Who, What, Where?

PU used to be cheaper. The world has moved on…

Our EPS blanks for 2# are $65 cut out w/domed decks and $55 if you don’t want them domed or cut out. Our 3# is $75 cut out w/domed decks and $65 if you don’t want them domed our cut out. Paul www.homegrownfoam.com

same size walker is less than high end styro…

I make my own 2# EPS blanks for UNDER $10 stringerless, about double that with a stringer.

This of course doesn’t take into account the cost of my hotwire setup…just the cost of raw materials. My hotwire cost about $50 bucks to make. Plus an additional $8 for some masonite to make rocker templates.

The answer, if you are looking to save money, is to do it yourself.

If you are depending on someone else for blanks, you pay what they ask, or you go home with no blank.

The other thing that you must take into account, is beside the fact that there is the cost of raw materials, tooling, and labor factored in, you are also paying for the design of the rocker.

I design all of my own rockers, and I have hours put into designing and perfecting, and updating my rockers. They are worth more to me than any amount of money.

Basically, if I were you, I would make my own. It is not as hard as it seems, and you get to have complete control over your designs, from the rocker up!
