Plunk down your 2 cents and come into my thread and let me entertain you with deads of daring do!! Watch while I create magic before your own eyes! As I jump through clouds of balsa dust, risking life and limb as I rip up piles of wood with pourful tools !. Oh,heck! lets just get started!! I dreamed up this board during my morning paddles, 2hrs everymorning, I built it in my mind over and over. I knew what I wanted long before I ever started building it. I wanted a big fish with pointy nose. Very big butt crack and the fins could not stick down more than 6 and 1/2 inches. I had a volume in mind. width ,lenghth, and thickness were flexible as long as it look the way it did in my mind! I sat down with AKU shaper, did the outline and rocker and then went to work on the rail shape.Trouble here, If I tried to carry the thickness out to the rail it was just ugly. I lofted the outline on paper full size 3 times also the rocker. If you rely just on AKU you dont see what you realy have as the computer screen is just to small. I finally got the rail shape that I wanted. What was cool with AKU was I could print out rails full size and see what they looked like in real life. When my loftings were good I made a full size 1/2 patern on 1/8 inch ply and marked all the ribs on it. The rocker profile I lofted dirrectly onto the plywood. I laminated the spine out of 2 thicknesses of 1/8inch plywood with 4 oz glass cloth in the middle this allowed me to get the 12 foot lenth that I needed. Im useing home grown balsa and 1 redwood stick and 1 cedar stick.

All the frame (rib) measurements were transfered from the patern , no tape measure was used.
Heres the spine after cutting int out. All of the rib locations were transfered from the pattern useing a story pole.
ooooooooh looking forward to following this one… I have a feeling it gunna be very nice!
Lovely wood!
oh my wood porn cant wait to see the centre fold.
story pole my favourite tool. Love the use of bricks and blocks for your curving i might borrow that one is it patented.? I use three thin strips helps with grain and use small pinch clamps to hold the three in place wood needs to be ruff start in mid point with nail.
have fun
hold on gang

these are old pictures and the following ones will leave you breathless
I gaurantee this.

I marked the location of the ribs on the spine then drilled and cut out all the wood that I didn't need between the ribs. Tried to get rid of the max.
These are all the rail profiles that I printed out from AKU shaper. I cut strips of 1/8 inch plywood the width and length of each rib. (took the thickness of each from the stringer and width from my 1/2 template) Then I glued the rail profiles to the ribs spraying the addhesive carfully onto the ribs.
This is the results after glueing on the rail profile patterns. Take note of the 1/4 inch by 1/2 inch notches cut in the center of the rib. The notches can be cut before or after the profiles are glued on. I did both.
I made a template for the crown on all the ribs. Then I cut them out on the bandsaw, carefull to save the line.
I sanded them to the line. Always save the line.
You can see here how the ribs are notched and fit in the spine
Here is the rib in place on the spine.
I drilled the holes leaving at least 1/2 inch top and bottom . I tried to space them as even as I could across the rib. Set up the drill with one size bit and would cut that size hole in all the ribs before changeing to the next bit (hole saw)
here they are all lined up and ready to go.
That’s what I call precision craftsmanship… Can’t wait to see what’s next!
Drool!. Some of the board threads recently, including this one have been insane!.
beefan.ah yes
but as an intrinsic contrary
I must say ‘’ quite sane.‘’
and yes O’balsa
the high religion
of wood work is
well served in the
Ogre’s workshop.
the additioal footage
yet to be revealed
will keep your jaws
hanging slack and low
for pages to come.
like a saturday matinee
every post is a cliff hanger.

there is life after the whip cut turn
camplus, I wasn't playing no suspense card! Just playin with myself and not payn attention AH!! Just got caught!!! Everybody wants to see a hallow rail build. I been looking for that one myself for years but nobody wants to show it . How many people know how? Paul Jensen? Dannny Hess? Nobody is willing to share. Heck I had to figure it out myself!! Actually I didn't figure it out. It came to me in a flash! I was haveing a Vietnam war flashback and there it was, just as clear as day!! Maybe I wont show how, just kind of skip over those pictures! Unless enough guys beg to see. Maybe I should get a patten!! Or just take it with me to my grave!!! If I show , will I become famous ? Wood_Ogres famous Hallow Wood Rails !! I sure would like to be a fly on Danny Hess shop wall !! Darn how bought that guy that makes the cardboard frame surfboards. He doesn't even have any wood working tools. But damn, He's good with that computer and CNN machine. I sure would like to learn that!! So much good shit going on out there and not enough time to learn it all!!!!

Very nice! The suspense is killing me. You cut out nice round ends on the ribs, so you aren't doing the Paul Jensen style rails. I don't see a notch for a chine strip, so it doesn't look like you are going with the bead-and-cove method.
I can hear the drum roll, and am waiting for you to hit the symbol.
Aw man! Now I have to explain to my lady why I've got no appetite. And she's making my favorite for dinner too (grilled sqiurrel on paulownia greens).
Yep, so many good ways to skin a squirrel on this one, but so few detailed skinning instructions . . .
Like we used to say in grade school: "I'll show you mine if you show me yours" er, uh, hollow rail build tech that is.
