My all time favourite log movie is
LINES FROM A POEM
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ioc1NEtr16c
Very underground and shot at some of Australia’s best points and beachies; I can watch it over and over.
Also has some unseen 60’s footage, interviews and stuff.
Also well regarded:
SEEDLING
GLASS LOVE
SPROUT
ENDLESS SUMMER
LONGER
SINGLE FIN YELLOW
Always wanted to see WAY OF LIFE but its hard to get in Australia.
Progressive longboard hurts my eyes…but each to his own.
Lots of great films listed. One that I have’nt seen mentioned is “Tales from the Tube”. It had a couple of corny bits (don’t most surf flicks have em?). But also included some solid north shore footage not seen in other films from that period.
Glass Love…
The section with the Currens, Pat, Tom, and Joe is pretty awe inspiring.
The section with the Purchases is interesting as well. Neil’s back hand tube riding is a sight to see.
Sprout…
Tom’s whole gig looks pretty right on.
The hammer at the end with Dan on Gerry’s board sealed the deal for me.
Not really a surf film but who could forget the all time classic…
All I need are some tasty waves, a cool buzz, and I’m fine.
The clips on this article:
Free Ride
Pacific Vibrations
Evolution
Morning of the Earth
Barefoot Adventure
Five Summer Stories
The Sunshine Sea
Free and Easy
Side note:
Apocalypse Now is NOT a surf flick!!
A Far Shore
The Elusive
Lines from a Poem
Sprout
and the Ultimate
Surf Nazis Must DIE
The worst, Ride the Wild Surf (I think) with G Clooney
Excellent posts! Ive not seen Lines from a Poem - is that new? And have been meaning to see Single Fin Yellow, so its a must do now.
Anyone want to bite if i add In God’s Hands…?
(I’m not actually serious. Seriously. Sam George just grates me. Sorry George).
I was glad to see FREERIDE in there.
Anyone know how to get a copy. It seems to have vanished off the face of the earth. I just want to see the Sanur footage again.
Though I’ve never seen Free Ride listed for sale, anywhere, you might try to track down Bill Delaney to get a copy. I bought mine from him about 20 years ago.
I have all the films I listed, on tape or DVD.
Surf Nazis must Die !
Funny stuff there, Herb! A couple of buddies of mine were stunt doubles on that movie. There’s a scene at Sunset where Chris (as whatever ridiculous character he was called, most likely “Hook”) paddles into a wave with the plastic hook in his mouth, puts it on his hand, gets the hair from the wig out of his eyes, and then rips a Sunset wall (in a fullsuit, no less). We rented a VCR player to watch that epic flick when it first came out (in times BVCR’s). The player we rented didn’t have fast forward, so we had to deal with this horrible sensory assault of the most ludricous kind just to see our buddies surfing!
The Performers by Quiksilver, the first one, the second and third are okay, but the first is the best. But who could forget and I know people have mentioned it before, The North Shore.
“Scrub it kook”…as told to Rick Kane after he hits the reef at Pipe. So he will not get reef rash.
1981’s “On Safari to Stay” with a very young Joel Tudor and Wingnut. Great sequences in Mexico.
FIVE SUMMER STORIES
FREE RIDE - ( although i aint’ seen it in years)
SPROUT
STORM RIDERS
Bunyip Dreaming. A absolute classic in my opinion.
I’m in Australia. However can anyone suggest where you can get copies of many of the movies everyone has been mentioning?
Sometimes its also the place where you see the movie which can help make it special.
Like going to see Storm Riders at the Sydney Opera House. Hilarious, a pack of salt encrusted surf grommets howling over all the great parts in an Opera House that’s shaped like giant shells.

I got a couple of videos from Peninsula Surf Centre, years ago. It looks like their online store is gone, though. I bought a copy of Pacific Vibrations through them, when it was not for sale in the USA, due to a music rights dispute.
You could try http://www.surfvideo.net . I am not sure if they offer vids and DVDs in the right format for OZ, though. For tape, you’d want PAL format, and DVD is region 4 where you are. Another source for old vids The Longboard Grotto, in CA.

There’s always ebay. But again, you want to make sure the tape or disc is the right format for your region.
I know what you mean about location. The first time I saw Free Ride was at the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium. An old theater packed to the rim with surf rats. Frisbees flying back and forth, and a pungent, smoky odor filled the air. At certain points in the film, the noise was deafening. Fun time.
The Performers by Quiksilver, the first one,
You mean this one?
Like Big Wednesday, they recycled the title from an older surf film. The original film to use that title was by Greg MacGillivray, in 1965:
“A Scene At The Sea” by Takeshi Kitano
