Astron Zot not everyone's cup of tea it seems.....

I learned as a kid to ignore bullies. Seems like I forgot that rule. Perhaps, when these rabid dopes enter into a perfectly good discussion, we who are enjoying ourselves should ignore them. I shall certainly try to remember the rule. Ignore any pesky bastard and he will, eventually, go away.

I feel the Noel was a hard working allay of McCoy and distributed Geoffs boards for years.Everyone gained.

It seems that after written agreements lapsed, verbal ones allowed the relationship to continue. Now theyve been revoked (as per Geoffs statements in the Industry Section), Geoffs not supplying Noel boards to distribute and Noels making his own versions to satisfy the customers looking for that style of board.

Noels got all the dims and the customer contacts looking for a McCoy and I dont think its fair to rebadge exact copies and call them your own.

However Noels certainly done the hard yards and helped distribute McCoy boards, so its rough when longstanding connections fail, but if you havent got the license, you shouldnt gain from your inside knowledge after things are terminated. I dont know how it all sits legally but I wouldnt make exact copies and call them by the same name, it could end up in court and might have ramifications for the rest of the industry.

Thatd be interesting, registered surfboard 'designs', where no one could make a board within a  1/2 in of the same dims !

Geoff will always only do 'his thing' and Noels already moving on.

Noels a great businessman and shaper and did his best for Geoff, its a pity it didnt continue. Both guys obviously had a great thing going.

Considering all the compound, complex curves involved in rocker, belly, vee, domes, concaves, thickness flow, etc  that would be pretty much impossible to even begin to write a regulation.  At least seems so to me.

Surffoils..this is a fair post of yours.  I appreciate the tone.   I'm still a fan.  Just to correct you. The " only " board I do with close measurments of Geoff is my personal 7'2'' which was shaped specifically to my direction. I used to do a couple of templates that Cheyne gave me that were his personal boards for his logo.   The other boards are Horan templates or just a shapers personal version  and I came up with that label ( not the logo just the idea for a label ) because there has always been so much interest in Cheyne and those boards.  I call them piglets now to emphasize the original outline and to avoid hard feelings.  Just to correct you a bit.  Contracts can't be terminated unless both parties agree and the other one before mine ..I simply do not know the details only that it's been that way a very long time.  As for the dome..it's a valid thing to attempt to duplicate, but I don't think any two boards or bottoms are exactly the same...but I do think other shapers can attempt to duplicate neutrality even if they don't get it exactly like Geoff.  The only reason the thing didn't take right off was because of the price and geography to get them here. Folks want to try the design, but most simply will not come up with that much money..so they call me or some other shaper they are interested in. It's been that way in the industry for a long time.

Until all this popped up..nothing was going on on my part other than to sell the occassional Greg Pautsch and Horans. My label Revolution was originally designed not to be so much a label as an affiliation of great shapers.  Kind of like lightning bolt was at one time.  Most of the stuff I am doing now is moving forward as you just mentioned.  Doing different things with similar designs some of which are based on stuff Cheyne was doing in the mid eighties and early ninties. Also other stuff that will be completely different than anything like these.   I'm sure Geoff will continue being Geoff and coming up with new things.

I did make a couple of others that were going to go to Geoff and to start the contract, but I decided not to continue after a few conversations with Geoff and the over all uneasiness of the thing.  I was doing the Cheyne boards and dealing with  Pautsch before ever actually working with Geoff. In fact, Cheyne introduced me to Geoff.  My passion for that history and those designs has always been genuine.  Kind of like Earnest Thompson Seatons love of the New mexico wilderness and writing about that and illustrating it and ultimately brining about passion towards it through his writing among every day U.S.  You might remember his story Lobo.

I think much of this trouble actually started with a misconception  on Geoff's part and likely over eagerness on my part.   My interest has never been anything but the best intentioned toward Geoff, Cheyne and that entire period of history and accomplishment.  If at times it came off like promoting myself or spamming it was never my intention.

I like it all with regards to surfboards, but this stuff always just stuck closer to my heart for some reason.  I don't think I am alone.  I hope we can all move past the harsh feelings and back to our normal communicatin here on swaylocks.     Take this as my Olive branch to all of you folk I have been arguing with the last couple of months including Marc.

I'm sure Mr. Swaylock will be relieved to not have the harsh feelings floating around any longer if that is possible.

Noel, Agreed. Lets have a cyber beer and move on.

...piglets...nice one.

Geoff would certainly want to have the names of his boards registered( Potbelly,Zap,Zot etc) as they could be taken away from him. It happened when an American company registered the name 'Ugg boots' which was just a generic name that you instantly visualise as the product. We had to call them sheepskin boots (w.t.f) after that.

You have to love the freedom of speech your allowed on this forum because unless you had access to G.P and McCoys legal paper's you should shut your pie hole on that front (as well as the conflict of interest from either parties 'only truth')  .I know I didn't have to sign a legal waiver to join swaylocks, so some people should not voice an opinion on things they obviously know nothing about or at the very least put all their possessions in a trusted family members name !

Just read my last post.  I was only addressing you for the top section out of interest. I certainly was not implying the rest of you, as I have previously referred to you as 'the voice of reason'. Sorry if you get that impression from it , cheers mate!

Anyone out there willing to review their Astron Zot?

Could be a case of the Emperor’s new clothes.

I tried the Stumpy and didn’t find the magic.

I do prefer wider nosed boards though.

geoff if you reading this . best to chat about this stuff on over a cuppa tea, move on mate. solo is a good bloke. his support for you sells boards in australia as well .if the business plan didnt work out then its best to disccuss these things in private… and Drifter your epic struggle for justice is doing a great deal to hurt geoffs business. please swaylockers it would be unwise to associate this character with Geoff and best wait and hear what the man himself has to say to his fans before casting judgement.

Thanks for the kind words Paul.  Hopefully, the harsh stuff is in the past.  I think most of us are ready to move on.  As Surffoils said...online Victoria Bitters for the board.

Huie - what’s your take on the Zot? Ride report, how it differs from some of the other McCoys in terms of ride and plan shape (I am assuming the bottom is consistent)? Is yours a sngle or a thruster?

Would love to hear your take Cuttle, when you get a chance to ride Huie’s (very generous offer, btw).

For the record, my double ender Horan is my favorite board. Balanced, fast, sooo easy to turn (6-6 x 17 x 23 x 18 x 3.25; rider is 1.83 M, 100ish kilos; intermediate skill level, by Florida standards - so not all that good!).

Huie might just be referring to one of his very fine looking home made hulls as opposed to the zot.....show us again huie....<pretty please>. If i ever get to Noosa I wanna try one.....

i think that double ender he posted is a replica of a board found in a shed in the last couple fo years from huies factory in noosa in the 60s i recall he told me there is some footage that paul witzig has of it (or something similar) being ridden in 66 67. i think hes saying we all have our influences including geoff. most likely Kevin platt that was doing the early ones

this is the board that i have made referece to shaped by k p  prbly jan 68  i do not see evidence of any before it

the current board at noosa is built using that plan shape with some hully aditives thanks to (greg liddle)

the footage you refer to is  a young grom riding a 5’ built to suit but many shapers shaped groms short boards and it has nothing to do with shortboard revaloution nor do i give a fig,

and i am willing to listen to anyone who was there that can convince  me otherwise [img_assist|nid=1052166|title=platt board|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=480|height=640]

thanks for clarifying that mate

bunyip just call in to solace they will have one for you to try e mail me when you are going i will make sure you get to try one

          cheers huie

actually interesting you say that about shortboards being made well beofer the revolution .i saw 1965 photograph in a NZ book with a girl with a sub 7foot board with a very modern eggy looking outline. cool photo of a few local blokes with big huge boards and one chick with a little one( pretty sure it was 1965 and the book is called gone surfin)
