This is so funny…were having a discussion about cyber points. So if I get 70 cyber points do I get a free set of steak knifes? WTF, who cares about the + or - system. If someone is a complete ass wipe…get rid of them. Mike P and the Mods are the rulers…who ever said Swaylocks it is a democratic place? Life is too short to put up with A-wipes… BAN THE A-WIPES.
Like the seal slayer said, what the heck are points good for if I can’t exchange them for a trip to fiji with keith, a new board from balsa including the round trip ticket to pick it up. Or even a free trip and place to stay at the next swayholics campout. Now that should be a given for a certain number of points.
I don’t have time to post more than a brief summary of the biggest problem I see with this proposed system. I will discuss more of the potential issues with you off-forum via PM.
No offense intended Mike. But this system can easily be overridden and abused in a matter of days to a few weeks.
There are several well established internal groups at this forum. Members of these groups will likely upvote one another until they each have enough points to start downvoting. From there, any member of one of these groups can easily eliminate anybody they dislike or who will not drink their CoolAid.
If I can see this, a member(s) in these groups will also.
Speaking of Ambrose. I recall that someone called him an asshole. I know, funny, Ambrose and asshole. But, his response was perfect. He said, “How did you know my middle name? Ambrose Asshole Curry lll” or something to that effect. Priceless wisdom. Just need to remember it’s just surfboards and having fun. Nobody’s curing cancer or feeding the hungry as far as I know building water toys for affluent human beings with a bit of extra time at their disposal. Have fun girls… mike
I can do without the drama that goes with the personal points / down voting thing, but I hope we can always vote up or down on posts, it’s fun and an easy way to say I agree or disagree. Doesn’t have to be tied to personal points does it?
Personally I think the whole points thing is silly. Give individuals the ability to block people they find to be trolls and ban people who become disruptive or uncivil. Over the years I’ve been here I’ve only encountered one person who fit that bill. Guess I’ve missed the drama that others are seeing.
Regarding the valuation of threads over posts. There are more than a few pointless threads at Sways.
But some of the most valuable contributions to Sways have been in the form of posts not threads. Many of Bill Barnfields classic contributions to this forum came in the form of posts within threads created by others.
Many members at Sways offer invaluable information and advice as posts/comments rather than creating threads.
Sorry magentawave you feel that way, but I think you gotta take a step back here. i.e, “core of angry haters”, really? Because someone said get a sawzall and cut your board into little pieces, that’s just a bit of humor and sarcasm to make a point, but I know who said that and he’s not a hater, he’s a really helpful poster who makes awesome boards and will go out of his way to help anyone he can. Sometimes the intent gets misread on internet, its better to cut some slack and don’t take stuff so seriously, ignore the comments you don’t like, or say haha funny, or something.
If a guy had some bad experiences with SUP surfers and vents a little here, again don’t take it personal. We all know there are good SUP guys who don’t endanger everyone around them, and know how to share and show respect, plenty of guys who post here make and ride SUPs. But some places get overrun with kooks on SUPs, and yeah, it affects your attitude toward them. “close minded silver back apes” - now who’s starting to sound like a hater? Haha, just kidding, laugh a little, its just a bunch of guys talking about their water toys.
Yes the forum has problems and issues, but look around you, the world we live in has problems and issues. There’s an awful lot of good useful information to be had here, and sometimes a nice compliment or a little stoke, or just a really cool experience someone is sharing.
I post my builds here, I’m no expert, I’ve been told I use the wrong tools, and I’ve posted and been ignored, and etc. etc., but I’ve gotten some nice compliments on my builds too, and some good helpful suggestions, and I’ve even met some nice people here that are actually nice in person too. So keep posting your builds, look for the helpful stuff, ignore the other stuff, and go get some good waves on your home made surfboard!
Sorry to agree with magentawave on his critique, but it is close to correct.
Just like life, 10% are great people, and they come every year to big Sur. 10% are miserable, and like to spread their outlook on life.
I’ve been in favor of the ignore option. Because that IS what happens in the end. If a member can’t ignore a particular obnoxious poster, then they just ignore the whole site. Too many good guys have chosen this option.
I was 1 point away from winning the prize (a shiny new Skil 100 planer) and someone down-voted me for not sharing which glue I use for gluing my blanks up.
I wish I had a universal “ignore” gun, point and pull the trigger, boom - they’re gone! I could take it on the freeway with me, out in the lineup, to work, to all my family get togethers, point it at the politicians on my tv, man, I would run that battery down! My wife doesn’t need one 'tho, she has mastered the mental zen of ignoring at will, which shows that practise makes perfect, hah!
Points for hire. Points trading. Extortion by threat of minus points. Been going on for years with the sellers’ feedback rating system at eBay and amazon.
