At its core Swaylocks is a science forum.

Materials ratios chemicals techniques flex foiling placement curves additives equipment.

Were all amateur chemists scientists with a few professionals too.

It'd be a pretty dull place if we all stayed on topic.

Ive learnt some things by reading the more 'vigorous' threads too.

To me, the forum is educational, for teaching, sharing, asking, analyzing, learning, showing, being shown.

I've noticed that the people who seem to thrive in this environment are those who tend to be inquisitive, curious, focused on learning, and/or those who are teachers, mentors or coaches by nature.  I think Reverb is right on in his assessment.

Because this is a community with a lot of people and a lot of activity, other agendas appear also, of course.  I think people who are knowledgeable, but not sharing or giving by nature, might seek adulation or prestige in the community.  Others, new to boardbuilding, might show up wanting to learn, but not being really inquisitive or curious or open minded enough to be taught.   My theory is that these will tend to meet with less satisfaction, and find themselves more focused on complaining or arguing than sharing or encouraging.

Sometimes people leave because other things in life take priority over surfboard education.  I'm glad for the time I have to be here, I try to get as much as I can from the forum while I have the opportunity, and learn from the willing teachers while we have them.

To me, the forum is educational, for teaching, sharing, asking, analyzing, learning, showing, being shown.

aren't all these things arguing forms?

there is a dispute on the correct spelling of argueing

I had to google argue just to make sure I spelt it right.

and what did I get?

handicapped arguing**9** up**5** down

When somebody is arguing** verbally, they realize that they are wrong, and start to raise their voice and rudely change the topic of the argument so they can be right and you can feel bad. Typically begins with a personal insult with multiple cuss words.
People that do this clearly don't care about what the argument was actually about, they only care about winning an argument making someone feel bad, or getting the last word. This is very immature, and you should not participate

The comeback inevitably used by the loser of a flame war. Usually accompanied by an image of someone running at the Special Olympics(with optional G.W Bush head pasted on) and the text: "Arguing**on the internet is like running at the special olympics. Even if you win, you're still retarded."
An utterly stupid child who must turn everything into an argument to survive. This child will believe he is right even when clearly wrong. Feeds on arguments, babies and Big Macs. This child may squint his eyes whilearguing** and include a slight headbob.

Etymological fallacy

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Etymological_fallacy
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The **etymological fallacy** is a genetic fallacy that holds, erroneously, that the present-day meaning of a word or phrase should necessarily be similar to its historical meaning. This is a linguistic misconception.[1] An argument constitutes an etymological fallacy if it makes a claim about the present meaning of a word based exclusively on its etymology.[2]

A variant of the etymological fallacy involves looking for the "true" meaning of words by delving into their etymologies,[3] or claiming that a word should be used in a particular way because it has a particular etymology. A similar concept is that of false friends.

Lots of insight to be gained. The difficulty is being able to recognize which hat to wear, at any particular time. Swaylocks is amazingly civil.  Go to my home forum and see what asinine arguing and negativity goes on there on nearly every thread in both the Design Forum and especially General Discussion

When you post photos..... hold the board so that it hides your beer gut.....

...

...when you surf...take control of your board and don't Kook out.....Have fun!!!

I start at the end, see if I like it, then go to the start, argue with myself which post I like, wish I could get to the end again so I could say what I was thinking and you guys always get too technical. So I love the end, big board, would hide any gut, beautiful pintail, there are so many fantastic board builders here, hahaaha, where I grew up you cant be my friend unless you pay the piss out of me, so even though I really like most of you, you are a bunch of pricks and keep up the good work. When I dont like it anymore, I have a rest for a year or two, I like it to be fun,

 cheers H.

I really love that pintail

no rest for the wicked.

I’d like a like button here and I’d like a I dont like button on facebook, while I’m at it I’d like golf to be 14 holes, a sixpack to be an 8 pack, what else? that;l do for now, oh yea who made up these rules in the 1st place?

Is this intentional?   Because I was thinking that this thread fits his desription of Swaylocks.

Yea, a like button would be cool, there would probably be a few less comments.  I personally like when a rookie comes in and begins to pontificate.  There are right and wrong ways to do things and getting a lecture on how great a wrong way is can be … well … interesting.  The kid who was doing youtube shaping videos comes to mind who had shaped about two boards and was setting himself up as the next major guru.  Poor kid got his bubble burst when Jim the Genius told him that if continued these practices he would end up with missing fingers.

But generally the debate is healthy.  For me the acceptance of many board building designs, materials and techniques in the surf world is something I always wanted to see.  Used to just piss me off that everying had to be so narrow minded. This place, like no other, has provided a broader view for the sport. We have all benefitted.  Look around at every break in the world and we have evolved.  Thanks Mike.
