'panels' [fin and 'art']

thanks Cam , it's great to hear from you !

yes , I wish I could somehow duplicate this panel , as a pair of fins / keels with those patterns would look al[r]ight , I reckon !!

how are those starry quads [from your template ] going by the way , mate ?

  cheers

  ben

hi chip,
Quads are going really well - I have them in that little quad fish that I shaped… Photos of the board were on here a few years back

great !!

glad you're enjoying them ...do they hold in well  off the bottom and the lip ?

would you like me to send you some cardboard templates of what i came up with , adjusting YOUR templates ?

  cheers

  ben

...thanks for the 'p.m.' ,  Cam ...I'm always glad of the feedback !

well, the other day , I laid up this panel , for the matching 'runner' template ....

BLOG0545.jpg

It has since been cut out , foiled , sanded , put in the Proboxes in  'the orange stub' .....

and ....

we [stub and I] are now patiently [?] waiting for a swell and shape increase , in order to test ride it ...

stay tubed and ...er .... " tuned" ...

  cheers mate !

..... hopefully , following Hicksy's recent visit [?yesterday?] these mini 'runners' are now in California , with a certain Mr. Kensurf  ?

Very inspiring, chip.  I’m going to search for the thread where you outline this process.  I have a quart or so of RR epoxy laying around. Do you think it would work fine in this application or would I have heat problems with so many layers?  Thanks and cheers from Oregon.

thanks mate ! I use polyester resin in my panels , so I'm not sure ... I DO remember that the one panel hicksy made with his epoxy resin took forever to gel, and when it did [because we hdn't used release agent or whatever you use with epoxy ] , we literally had to break the [backing sheet of] glass with a hammer , to get the panel off ...it was messy .

So , if you can , it might be easier with polyester resin .

hopefully the thread [?maybe by 'chipfish61?] might be called something like "laying up a fin panel " or making fibreglass fins ??

I forget , because I've posted so many threads here , over the years , nd the search mechanism has changed , too ...

good luck , you can certainly be a test pilot for this ....

[I will do some sort of search for that thread too, but if it doesn't eventuate , I could copy and paste what I sent to another sways brother here in a 'p.m. ' ....I could post here , or ?start ANOTHER "making fins" thread ???!!! ]

  cheers !

  ben

Ah yes, because epoxy is such an adhesive I could see problems with the glass backing getting stuck.  I will look into a “release agent” of some sort (perhaps wax?) and I think I will just order some slow hardener for the epoxy fin making since I will need some for installing the fin boxes this time so I don’t burn my garage down.

hi mate ...

here's a previous thread on the subject , hope this helps ??

and there 'should' be something relevant amongst THIS , too, hopefully ...

     cheers !

      ben

 hi again , mate ...

is there a particular reason you are using epoxy , eg :  are your boards polystyrene blanks ?

just wondering , is all .... because a polyester resin fin panel will be quicker to make .

cheers !

  ben

Thanks for the links, found some relevent info.  No particular reason for using epoxy other than it is what I have laying around and I’m curious it will have different flex than poly resin.

Howzit chip, I always lay down some wax paper first and then the panel comes right off what ever you are using for backing and you can peel it off or just sand it off when you foil the fin. Aloha,Kokua

I'm on to ya Chipper!

"

I'm on to ya Chipper! '

and hopefully onto ya board [goes the fins] and onto ya ocean goes the board and onto ya wave face stays the board and  onto ya tube of the day , flies out kensurf ...."yewwwwww ! STOKED , mate !"

  cheers !

I don't know about the flex , I only know that polyester is easy and quick to work with for fin panels , and I don't like to make things more difficult [than they already are] , when it comes to fin stuff...[or anything else in LIFE , for that matter ! ]

Well, I got some new tint the other day . And some core cell /  core mat ...

BLOG3138.jpg

BLOG3136.jpg

BLOG3137.jpg

BLOG3141.jpg

okay ...so I started with 15-20 mls of  [clear] laminating  resin , to coat the glass pane . [ This is a 5" x 7" panel ....]

BLOG3170.jpg

Then , placed on two layers of 4oz cloth. Then , 1 layer of core mat , laminate . Next layer of core mat , laminate .

BLOG3142.jpg

then , two more layers of cloth , laminated clear . After that , each further lamination was done using the green tint.  I added around 26 layers of 4 and 6 oz cloth . This time , I laminated four layers at a time .

BLOG3132.jpg

Doing it this way , the inside of the fin[s] remains the white core mat material . If I'd wanted , I could have layed down green tinted resin from the start , for a green tinted inside edge ....]

Here are the two finished panels , pre-cutout. They have been prised from the glass pane , with the masking tape removed . They are  flipped over , and put out in the sun, to dry the  edges that were taped ....

   cheers !
