'panels' [fin and 'art']

hi again mate !

well , since your last reply ...

.....it's only a 'rough out'  [I tried to freehand sketch / reduce the big one , rather than the "photocopier on 50% reduction"  option [that can be done , though , if need be!]

the 'nutrigrain twinzer ' template  ....

noceanstwinzerroughguess11.jpg

noceantwinzer2.jpg

2nd choice [slightly less curved leading edge ]

noceanstwinzertemplate2.jpg

for them to be matching , they would [all four fins] be single foiled ...I 'could' try inlaying the material in the middle layer[s] of the twinzers , I guess , but the double-foil..well...  you know , us tinkerers are not at the robin mair or lokbox level yet [and may never be? dunno]

   cheers Noe !

     ben

Hi Ben, yeah really like the second template, ill send some more stuff your way tomorrow…

If you can double foil the fronts that would be sweet, in terms of thickness as we discussed earlier ill leave it up to the fin tinkerer, do what ya reckon is best ill be stoked with them im sure… looking forward to tryin them out, surfed the board today as a thruster so cant wait,

cheers

thanks noe !

I think I will do the leading edge and fins thinner if that's okay ....

hey , the board looks great ! [ I saw it on the mini simmons thread .]

Would you still like to do the tabs yourself ? [stoked if yes !]

Also, they will be thinner front twinzers then , if double-foiled.

I could possibly send you some CLEAR 'twinzer' ones [maybe ? 'Glo ones' ?]   too , as easier to double foil without having to worry about  the cloth inlay !]

I REALLY look forward to seeing and hearing you ride it as a 'Twinzer' setup , Noe !  [this is something I fully want to be a part of !]

  cheers matey !

  ben

...how did it go as a thruster , by the way ?

what were the waves like ?

september25thtp28th2011panels190.jpg

okay , so as I cut into the carbon fibre / tint panel ... what I half-expected , DID happen ...the 'pre-preg' stuff peeled away ....

....YIKES !!!

blog4.jpg

[these are the two gold tinted inside layers , before the two layers of pre-preg] . I can use this for a fin template , at least ....

DSCF4903.jpg

So , I am now left with the "aztec gold" tinted  fin , and a kind of interesting pattern imprinted on the inside edge of the fin , which I've decided to keep there !

DSCF4900.jpg

....a thruster set of these could look nice , I reckon !

  cheers

  ben

Hey Ben, yup thruster went good , waves were 2 foot and super fast racey so was fun trying to make the wave just pumping the board and putting weight on front foot to speed along the face, super fun surf so hopefully the Twinzer will be as good, should be looser but more drive on the bottom turns and down the line…

Well, today , I made another 8x10" panel with the brown linen you sent me , Noe ! I intend to make a pair of twinnies ... but , a smaller , rakier version of your twinny templates . And a slightly smaller [than the ones for you] front 'twinzer' pair , too . [You've got ME wanting to try the twinzer setup now , mate !...]

I also did three other 6" x 8 " panels , pictured here ...

[ left: 'aztec gold' tint [which still looks a greeny shade to me?] with coremat , right : coremat , with resin swirl ]

 finpanels25thoctober21.jpg

finpanels25thoctober10.jpg

....another odd 'kinda' resin swirl "attempt"...

finpanels25thoctober4.jpg

  .....and ....

? the beginnings of two tiny curved fins , perhaps ?  .... if these work , I may have to call them the 'Dolmio grin' fins [as that is a Dolmio pasta sauce jar I taped the three layers to !]

finpanels25thoctober27.jpg

finpanels25thoctober30.jpg

finpanels25thoctober28.jpg

[I ran out of resin , only had enough for three layers of cloth in a tiny 4" x 6" sized panel , so this will be an experiment . I will get some more resin , then give a bit of thought to HOW I am going to roller the curves , and also , the angle at which to have the fcs tabs coming off the base . could be challenging [but , hopefully , SUCCESSFUL ,  and FUN ?!]

without much rake [ ? or none at all , even ?! ] , the largest these will end up being will be 3 1/2" to 4" depth  [allowing for half inch tab , 'added on ' to the base  ] , x 3" base per fin .....so , NOT  a lot different [in size] to the existing twinzer front template , that I posted previously , eh , Noe ?  [ I wonder how curved li'l twinzers would go , in front of a big twinny like yours  hmmmmm..... that's got me thinking [and , that is always DANGEROUS !  ha ]

  cheers !

    ben

Good stuff Ben! Interested to see you glass the cylinder fin.

....yeah ...me too ... thanks , Brother Bob !

I have never glassed a curved panel before [or cut out ,  and foiled one , either , for that matter ?!]

These will actually be half-cylinders /  ' half-pipes' .... maybe 'something' like the fcs 'G-CRV Webbers , but smaller ...and , with a different curve  of course .

I'd like to know how they arrived at their angles , when making those ones ?

I like how the 'G-CRV' [Webber's fcs ones] feel , and I have always been curious how smaller , different angled ones would go as little 2+1 setups in a mal , and also in my shortboard[s].

With summer's flatness approaching already [?!... yiiikes!] , they will be trialled mainly in my 9'4 mal , I think ....

But ,  I'd also like to try them in the 6'6 fat , five-plugged Walden , too  [? maybe with the 'webbers' in the back plugs , for a 'different' feel ?]

  cheers !

  ben

[I was drawing up a few different templates for them on cardboard , late last night ...to be continued...]

Glassing...cutting out...foiling (I'm still trying to wrap my mind around how you foil a curve)... Wow! I thinks this might be the ultimate challenge. Keep the photos coming of the process! I can't wait to see the next steps.

hi Bob !

...first , I'll need to buy more resin , and make the fins a bit thicker .

Then , when I've figured the tab angles , make them the fcs thickness.

I have now transferred the three layers of cloth I've layed up so far to a bucket to lay up the rest ...

BLOG5388.jpg

[to get  less curve , and a bit more height to the fins , is the plan !]

  cheers !

  ben

Hey Ben, that bucket looks like a good curve:) Intresting to see how you foil em…

hi all,

Think it’s my first post here

I’ve looked up a few threads but I couldn’t find a straight answer to this.

Once you’ve the panel done, I understand that a coat of filler/sanding resin is required for sanding. but is a thin coat enough ? What I mean is that, when foiling the fin, won’t you simply sand through the sanding coat and back on the tacky laminating resin ?

I’m obviously missing something

Ollie

No, because all the lam resin will be rock hard. It only remains tacky on the surface cos PE resin cure is inhibited by air. The wax in the filler coat will keep air of uncured resin. So when you go to foil, there should not be any soft spots.... especially deep in the panel.

oh ok now I get it. makes sense.

I’d found this thread that explained why lam resin is tacky http://www2.swaylocks.com/forums/sanding-lam-resin (oxygen capping the free radicals and preventing polymerization… ) but I hadn’t put 2 and 2 together. silly. … it’s friday.

thanks a lot.

the last six weeks have been spent ...making panels , cutting out and foiling fins , going surfing , working , and taking photos .

Here are just a few of the fin panels I've done  recently ....

' fluorescent yellow ' [tint]

with coremat ...

mandarin [tint]

and , without coremat...

finnypanellys2011and1243.jpg

resin swirl [pigments AND tints , combined]...

finnypanellys2011and1256.jpg

this is a yellow tint plus pigment resin swirl panel

[ this one is from a different panel to the one pictured above ] ....the 'outside edge'....

finnypanellys2011and1258.jpg

 ....the 'inside edge' ....

finnypanellys2011and1259.jpg

lime green [pigment] , mandarin [tint] , and fluorescent yellow [tint].  I may combine them in a panel ... maybe as a striped one ?

finnypanellys2011and1251.jpg

lime green [pigment] . I did four various-sized panels in this colour.

so with all the advice gathered. here’s my first attempt at making (and glassing) fins.

good on ya , mate , that's the way !

[  my 'work' here has been worthwhile , if even ONE of the thousands of users here has a go at making their own fin panels !]

so , please , can you tell us more ...

were these a fabric inlay ?

  or

did you use pigment to paint the stripes on the cloth , or the glass pane , when laying up the fins ?

how many layers of cloth ?

thanks heaps for posting these shots , keep on making fins and please post more of your work

  cheers

  ben

I used 30 layers of cloth but found it to be too much compared to some of the other keels I had so I had to sand it down a good bit. I would think 25 nex time.

yes it’s a cloth inlay. I won’t attemp to mess with pigments yet for my
first few boards…not till I can get my cutlaps tidy anyway. Also I do my own custom artwork on my boards anyway so I don’t need pigments really
