post Hull pics

the 8 footer is a great board! just got back from the sespe-got a slight powdering of snow last night, but had a nice fire going, was really awesome on way back today. i am currently switching between the 8’7", the 8’ and 7’6" …depending on conditions…

matt- it must have been so nice back there this weekend! i spent my childhood surrounded by the ghosts of the chumash- so many weird stories from running in hills, then when we started to tune in to the ethos as young adults it just escalated. i love my life in santa cruz but i miss the ghosts a lot- i just don’t see them here.

i know they are there-search the hills whenever you can…i know what you mean…

Jim…

Here’s that 9’ Spoon I told you about. Makes a perfect substitute when the waves are not hullable.

Sean,

Thanks for the pics. Nice board. How does it turn from the middle? I like the stand too. Where’d you get that?

Jim

The amazing thing about these boards by GL, they turn rather nice from the middle and can trim beautifully, and as Matt put it in another post thiese have an amazing excuse me gear. Currently the Spence spoons are really close in shape (though based on a PG I believe). Any hoo I’ll be hauling this one around a lot so I’ll let you spin it.

I’m getting a Spence spoon soon. Can’t wait.

I found the stand on ebay, If I see one again I’ll send you the link.

Are you getting a new spoon? Last month there were a few used at the Ventura Surfshop.

I’m gonna get a brand new one. I had to sell some boards I never ride. Seems like I’m shedding all boards except hulls and longboards (and things inbetween).

Here’s that 6’6" I told you about.

Ride’s cool for me though some pix a buddy took makes me look like a kook.

15 x21 x15 3" has tucked under rails with belly through the front 1/3 and a mild v off the tail. A nice board to ride when conditions are un-hullable.

would love to hear the story behind the big gash on the bottom.

Jim, I bit the bullet…getting an 8’6" from Mr. Kellog.

WHen I bought the board used it had a buckle in the glass and one day at a beachbreak I foudd it was flexing too much…

So I repaired it. Ugly as it is, it re-enforced the board well. Just needs a bit more sanding…

Afoaf,

Really? An 8’6"? You’ll be happy with it I’m sure. Can’t wait to see it. You are still welcome to borrow my 7’10" Liddle to try out for a few days if you want. I don’t ride that one much right now.

at least now we’ll be able to trade hulls.

I’m curious when hell become too short to be effective as ‘hulls’. Matt P (whos SN i forget on here) bought a tiny hull shaped single flex fin a while ago…the thing must be 6 feet if that, but has a huge belly and is even S decked. I don’t think its been surfed but once since then, but I’m curious seeing all of these hulls in the 7-8 foot range why there are no micro hulls out there?

one reason for the 7-8 foot range is amount of rail line and drive derived from that rail. the shorter ones don’t drive out of a turn on rail as the longer ones.however, that’s not to say the micro stubs aren’t fun and valid-just a little different approach…

Since this thread is at least as much discussion as pics, I might as well ask: Every time this stubby thing has come up, I’ve wondered if you (Matt) have ever ridden a 6 footer with rail fins, especially a quad – have you? Has anyone here ever ridden a mild hull bottom stubby quad? Just wondered.

I agree with Matt, the shorties are fun but don’t have the same glide and projection as the longer hulls.

Also found that waves that are faster down the line like the longer railed boards and waves that have power

but, not much of a wall or shoulder the shorties are quite fun…

Many people have asked me if I am riding a fish when I am on the 6’ and under…

Shorter rail, tighter turn… Longer rail, longer turn…

From what I understand, these new rail fin thingies alter that whole situation in a positive (fun) direction.

I did a search for “Pescado” and got (remembered) part of my answer, also a poster with a keel-finned hull is enjoying the heck out of those drivers.

So hulls and rail fins are not physically mutually exclusive! Score one for the irreligious!
