nope- i’ve ridden a quad, but not a hull one …
pg made a 7’ hull with double concave and single fin. i always thought with that configuration it would be interesting to do it with a bonzer 5 fin type set up…
That would be cool. I’ve thought about a bonzer/hull combo too. KP mentioned Andreini made something like that.
Jim,
I recently asked Marc about bonzer/hulls and he responded that ‘a bonzer works on all surfboard designs. It is just a double barrel concave between the side keels and the center fin that uses the venturi effect of squeezing water into a narrow space and letting off pressure as it passes through which creates forward continuous thrust. They are a little stiffer and require more force but they have superior holding capabilities in hollow surf. they rip!!’
WOW!
i wouldn’t think a bonzer setup would really be all that great for hulls … they look, and i’ve heard, that they are ridden off the tail. i would think too that the runner/keels would create heaps of drag when in trim. a twin keel setup on a hull would make more sense to me, than a bonzer setup… but one of my fave things about hull riding is the ‘no-drag’ feeling you get from the single fin. ( i’ve never rode a 2+1 parallel fin setup )
The hull in this board, around 3/8" or so, is concentrated about 6" behind the widepoint. Though, at first glance, it appears to belong in a different thread, the board is designed and shaped as a hull to be surfed off the back foot.
For some reason, I can’t see the photos.
----ok now I can----
hey spence, i actually saw that board a couple, maybe even three years ago posted either here or at surfermag. A pretty sweet looking board. still in my mind the essence of hull surfing is a long rail line to sink on bottom turns.
do you have pics of it being surfed??
Looking nice Ryan. I like the rocker on that one.
holy cow…that thing is sextastic.
SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET!
The Spence bonzer wasn’t made for me, but I took it out for a couple of sessions. I thought the board had serious promise. In three foot surf I was able to get repeated dead vertical hits with it. The board was made for someone that was about 30 pounds heavier than I am, and it was just a little too much board for me. One of these days I’d like to try another one in the sub 6’2" range. I did have a tendency at first to surf the thing too far forward. I corrected by repeating “on the tail, on the tail, on the tail” as I stroked into waves. Once I ingrained the adjustment into some muscle memory, the board was killing it.
yeah it is an interesting design for sure… so much so that i copied and emailed it to a number of friends to checkout… and looks to be a high-perf machine… but even though it’s got a convex bottom, it doesn’t look like a forward-trim, full-rail turning screamer that i associate with a ‘hull’.
I wonder if it has a similar feel as the Wilderness Stubbies by Bob Duncan? I rode one for a couple of years and liked the versatility. The board would easily carry me through flat sections but it performed best when surfed off the tail and in hollow beach breaks. Verts were a snap!..pun intended.
Ryan, that board looks crazy sexy cool if i’m allowed to quote TLC (Left eye RIP). What kind of bites you plan on putting in there?
that board looks crazy sexy cool
Send pictures of someone actually surfing the board. That’s the test for these one off’s. It’s so easy to say they look cool, but really, it’s about how they surf.
