You would be correct. The 8’7" third and maybe final Super Smoothie. Do you find that the fin box is much farther forward than normal? KP was correct in that it rides like a 8’0" or even smaller. I’m glad Greg was able to make this, the 15th GL for me.
Planning to catch dawn patrol Malibu with James Shank on Tuesday.
Miles,
The 8’0" is ready and waiting. We need another Hull gathering. How about meeting at Saf’s in Torrance for photos and Hull talk.
speaking of siglos if anybodies looking for one I just got a freshy from kluas the other day . its 6’2" and ready for a proud owner. send me a pm if intersted the boards at foam fins and fiberglass ventura
ive gone up to 6’8 for a velo-type templated hull (your siglo reference), and they still work insane my daily driver is a 6’7.
they dont feel like the small ones, its just a different trip…I think the best part about the short ones is that they are so quick under your feet if you need them to be, theyre a little more playful. when you get into the bigger ones you start to loose that, but theyre still really fun.
i think it comes down to the template’s curve more than anything, w/out going super wide you cant keep that same bend…I think thats where it looses its appeal as a small board and transitions to a different board alltogether…if that makes any sense?
Right on Dennis! Beautiful boards as always, and you’ve scored with the Riley’s riding em for you. Every time I talk to them, they’re stoked about something new you’ve come up with.
I’m curious as to what your foundation is to make such statements?
For the last 9 months all ive ridden are variations on this design.
Anything between 6’ and 6’7, all with the same base template, just stretched or squished.
ive shaped around 15-20 of them so far in different sizes and have the same feedback on all of them that i’ve found in my own riding, so i feel pretty confident in describing the different feelings I get from the different boards; it always helps being able to compare it against what others are feeling.
i have a 7 footer velo template that is perhaps my all time burner…then there is the simmons type boards pg made years ago at 9’8" which is the velo nose and tail connected with a staright line to complete the outline-proven rippers as well…
per photo with vaqueros de las olas boots(and some hulls posted a couple pages back) check out www.vaquerosdelasolas.com. hulls and accessories for all…

I caught you surfing one of the famed points and wondered who you owe the experience to? I read the chatter you write on the blogs here in Santa Barbara, pretty high bar,Talked to Max and he had some stories about the EB5’s he makes, wondered where the hull experience comes from? Seen a lot of 1’ and 2’ waves ridden.Who inspires you? Give up the back story.
Here’s an interesting thought. Maybe others can shed some light on this.
I was looking at one of Steve K’s old boards and it has a bunch of square sticker residue marks on the deck - spaced every few inches. I asked what those were and he said they were where he had some of that foam deck pad material stuck on there.
He said they found out that if the deck was sanded a certain way, you didn’t need wax. Your feet would grip fine but your wetsuit would still slide around when paddling. The foam deck patch stickers were to keep you on your board when lying down paddling due to the slippery wetsuit.
Kind of interesting to me because I hate wax. Wish I never had to use it.
The stories I’ve heard from KP, GL and others point out that if a deck was sanded I believe with only 40 or 60 grit it has incredible grip with the human foot (I even watched one sanded in the 80’s). In the pix in the journal article one SK’s boards has 2 dark strips on the deck, which are standard skateboard grip, used to keep them from sliding off of the sanded deck when wearing wetsuits.
I in the 80’s bough this grip stuff called ultradeck, made by Astrodeck, it was a spray akin to slipcheck but with a rubbery consistency. I had 9’ spoon, a 8’ hull and a 6’6" trifin I did this on. worked great but had to be re-applied every 12 to 18 months, and the stuff was a bitch to remove.
Currently I am, thinking of trying some of that el grippo with a light add of wax on the chest area (to keep my suit from shredding).
I have also hear that the plastic stuff you can buy to re-coat your tool handles with can work (the spray).
I even remember a board that I saw in the 80’s that was a 8’ mini-longboard that a guy had that was standard pe/pu construction with a top of a Morey Doyle attached to the deck.
And lastly I remember at the Dewey Weber Classic in 86, I saw Micky Munoz with some sort of rubberized astro-turf on the nose of his noserider.

im not quite sure what your question is…but ill try to respond the best I can.
W/regards to Max, i talked to him alot before shaping an EB5, he offered to help show me, and talked me through the exact way the he shapes them to help me out…so I owe that to him, but i think ive only every shaped 3 of those and dont ride them at all anymore.
the hull experience comes from talking alot with Kim R. over at the beach house and having him check out my boards for kicks, as well as Guerdon S. and looking though his collection of old boards, including a killer 7’2 PG hull from the 70’s…it comes from trial and error, love of the glide and a profound thanks to the originators of the design who ive talked to recently about it.
who inspires me?
people who enjoy the ocean as much as I do and who respect the others who also use it and respect it…im inspired by my friends who dont stop smiling when theyre gliding down the line; I think thats my main motivation.
