post Hull pics

sweet pintail!

Those boards in yr clip all look like sub-7’ stubs. I love the speed and flow… intoxicating to watch… oh, and the rail-grab cuts were good too.

Yeah, Ryan’s on a 7’ish. Steve’s on one of those yellow GL Stubbies posted in March. mijknahs is on his 7’2" Spence Stringerless.

That Ryan can really tap the speed.

Ian - great vid of you at Malibu man - thanks for sharing that! you’re going to be making a shorter hull? YES! i’d love to bump you and give it a run if you do end up making one. also love to see a Simmons, haven’t caught you down there with it on you yet but it’s only a matter of time, i know it. i finally figured how to do burst shooting on this new cam and next time i won’t be late on the draw, this thing FIRES through uploads in multiple shot mode, can’t wait to get some shots on the next swell (better get that floatie and strap is right). see you out there soon i hope

McMals! - killer footage you are sharing man! i don’t know how you can stand to be on the beach shooting vid when there is the tiniest bump out there to ride. it’s like being sick voluntarily. great new hull footage being shared all around!

i was in Laguna this weekend with my kid, a college bud, and his 2 girls. we hit Thalia St. for some beach time where i rode my 9’6 and actually got to go left for the first time in months…it felt great! i was loving watching the surf school students on doylies in what was basically a waist/chest high dumper…awesome balls on people who don’t know the first thing about a wave.

then i hit the Thalia St shop and i dropped a shit in the doorstep when i saw these 2 Gato Heroi micro hulls there…one is a 5’10 and the other is a 6’0

these things were a total trip. the rail didn’t get to be really hard until the tail, and i mean literally - they were forgiving all the way back to the bottom… the side bites are key with holding in, they’re noticeably bigger than other 2+1’s i’ve seen …the little glass on bastards looked mean. bigger and fwd of the box??? the pulled nose make them look like they’re a versatile beach/pointbreaker model, i have to admit i was really curious…not so curious i would opt to get on one in lieu of a new 6’8" but i was thinking about them for the rest of the day. Al Knost is apparently riding them in some parts of “Beach Blanket Burnout” - he can show us what they’re good for

looks like Mollusk Venice’s board rack is being graced with some new toys, one of which is that Ferrari Red Siglo - snooze and loose

…speaking of snoozing

i notice the sidebites are toed in and canted. even tho they’re small, i’m thinking ‘added drag’… and at only 5’10" you must really have to work that board.

Probably meant for constant carving/turning.

Yeah, the fins have too much toe in. Like a thruster…

Brian and I went thru this with the Gee Bee, the tow in helps the board turn off the bottom and turn a bit sharper, they are pretty small so drag is not a big deal. Alex Knost was riding Siglo on some trips , so Im sure this is Robbies version of that style of board.

i didn’t get a profile of the GH but i recall thinking paddle and float wouldn’t be an issue (if you’re into stubs). the one thing that really had me reeling was the 50/50 rail behind the side bites going all the way back to the tail’s corner. i bet that board is skiddy despite the 2 extra fins. can’t wait to see the what A Knost has on film riding both this board (called an “A Whole” on the Thalia St sight) and the Siglo…that guy rules

Miles, having that soft rail all the way back is not a good thing, the board will lack drive, unless you have some hero wave to push it.

K

just thought it would be really loose but now that you mention it, how can someone build drive without hold no matter how far forward the rider’s weight is? doesn’t make a lot of sense without a super tube driving the thing. i knew it was a hull the second i saw it, but the pulled nose made me think it was made for a good beach break, not a long point line. it also sports a 1/4" stringer which isn’t great for flex.

i talked to another friend tonight who scored a 7’ bonzer for a 2 week indo jaunt from thalia a couple of weeks ago. he said he had the same reaction about them when he was in there. looked at the concept and was interested and curious, thought of pulling the trigger but then went with his gut and passed. speculation about how it MIGHT work doesn’t equal any hard fast results - aka less than zero buyer confidence - then again “don’t knock it till you try it” ? you go first

He is definitely one of the more skilled surfers out at the point. Before he was using the Liddle, I think he was one of the better shortboarders out at the top of 1st pt. and 2nd pt. He still switches off between the Liddle and a shortboard I believe.

Can you guys ever surf without a wetsuits in yr stretch of coast ( SoCal)? Just boardshorts?

I may have asked this once before – but how much weight does a wetsuit add?

Every summer the water gets warm enough for boardshorts. Usually starts June or July and goes through September. I still wear a 1 mm longsleeve top to avoid wax rash and sunburn though. Water usually gets up into the low 70’s.

However, I’ve seen several people surfing last week without a wetsuit. Still a little cold for me especially if there’s some wind. Some people wear a wetsuit year round though.

How are the temps in the CZ?

Pac side water temps rainy season (Apr-nov/dec) avg 83f … pac side dry season (Jan-Mar) 69F-74F – steady NE trades cause an upwelling of colder water. still i pretty much just wear trunks – no shirt or lycra. air temps avg 85-95f year round.

Atl side water temps pretty much always 80-83F. ( i hardly surf atl side anymore.)

Keep those pics coming… and the clips…

showing pictures like that isn’t going to keep it at seven guys on days like that. Mum’s the word.Be cool.

Well your cold water temps are our warm water temps. In Oregon, their summer (warm) water temps are our winter (cold) water temps so I guess it just depends on what you’re used to.

I’ll bet there were about 30-40 guys spread out just to the left of this frame.

Same guy doing it up here at Rincon this winter. I thought the hull guys were cooler that that. You’re blowing it.
