this one’s got a series of concaves…I’ll post a bottom pic when its done.
-waste not want not on the blank. I was happy to see it get used, but yes it was ‘carnaged’. The rocker was tough to get right ,but to my eye, it looks like it will work well.
this is my first tint/pigment/cutlap and also fish haha
I made it for my girlfriend, haven’t yet hot coated or sanded it but i will post finished pics when im done.
reverb…WOW! That is really nice.
Hi reverb:
Very Nice color work!
Kind regards,

Board #6 turned into a lesson in what not to do…

I don’t really know what went wrong here. I wanted it to look like one of those smoky fishes that Darth Vader (or someone) posted way back near halfway in this thread. But it ended up looking like my 2yo son took off his soiled nappy (diaper for you lot across the Pacific) and wiped it all over my board.
I mixed all the colours (black, white and grey) separately and had a larger reserve of clear. I catalysed each colour and the clear, then poured the colours into the clear and gave one stir of the swizzle stick. With each one I used a <1% ratio so that - in theory at least - I should have around 15-20 minutes to get the job done. This is where things started to go pear shaped.
I poured it onto the board and let it sit for a while. Almost as soon as I started spreading the combined colour/clear resin over the board, it started to get a jelly-like consistency, with different colours gelling at different speeds. From there it was just a mad rush to get the board lammed before it went beyond the point of no return. No time to clean the squeegee as I went, so all the colours just blurred into a big blobby mess. Luckily it was on the side that will be in the water most of the time, but it’s a fustercluck none-the-less.
Anyone care to hazard a guess as to what the fark happened? Could it be the old resin I used. It’s the last 4L in a 20L bucket that I bought over a year ago.
Hopefully it’ll go well though. It’ll be my first time riding a quad, after years on single fins.
You live, you learn.
a coupla extra plugs for the twizered back twins setup , perhaps ? cass ?
and a fin box for the SINGLE FIN option , too ?
cheers mate !

Ha, I think I’d be pushing my luck Ben. I’m lucky that the thing just floats!
…is it heavy , cass ?
[img_assist|nid=1074315|title=tint|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=100|height=75]first tint, second board shaped. pretty stoked on how it came out kinda hard to see with the light reflection. just simple red and black. deck was just painted with acrylic. board is for my japanese friend lol

I would guess you are right about the old resin, and/or you were not quick enough mixing the individual colors into the clear. Here’s a similar board that I just did…I did several individual pours on the board first (including white over the fin boxes, some gray, and very small amount of pure black for contrast, then added a premixed swirl into the flood coat… you DO have to be careful getting the catalyst ratios right, I had a bit of early gelling on one color that just got a touch too much catalyst.
remember its just appearances…more important is how the board surfs!
Nice random color… I have a hard time in my marble shop keeping the casters from making patterns. Funny how a human brain will gravitate to non random shapes…you almost have to make them close their eyes!
sorry for multiple post couldnt resize correctly… so i made a photobucket…FIXED… just the lam. still have to clean the laps and hotcoat. first tint decided to go simple just red with black…
Hi Keith,
Thanks for the tips. I got those colours into the big batch of clear within 30 seconds of adding the catalyst, but the buggers all gelled at different speeds anyway. There might have also been a problem with the pigments. I bought them all about 6 months ago and had only used the black, but when I got them off the shelf the plastic lids on all three had cracked. I don’t know if pigment oxidises when exposed to air, but I’m guessing that it can’t be a good thing.
Slightly off topic, but now that I only have a small amount of each colour pigment left, can I bulk it out with a couple of ounces of resin in a sealed jar, or am I better off just forking out the cash for some new pigment. Shit, I know the answer to that before anyone even responds… but can you refresh an old batch of pigment with fresh resin?
That’s some nice work coming out of the Low Tech Lab.
