Show us your resin tints and patterns!

Wow! That’s a lot of work. Is that a stringerless blank? Carbon fiber rails?

Yep, stingerless EPS carbon/fiber rails glassed with Resin-X. The color’s on the hotcoat.

Did you use a coat of Resin-X to seal the paint job or did you use something like Krylon Crystal Clear. I think I’ve read somewhere that you can also use Resin-X as a finish/gloss coat or there’s a version formulated for glossing.

BTW - weight? How’s it ride?

…hello Atomized,

so, acrylic gesso

but is it possible to airbrush (thinned) or only with a brush?

I use silckscreening tints

—how in the world you guys can post such big pict?

I mean, without photobucket or any other services

in other thread (cannot remember) I asked Lokbox cause he save the pict for internet and use Swaylocks directly; I tried but without success

thanks

Nice work there Reverb!

I don’t really use an airbrush that much. I mostly paint with automotive sprayguns and touch-up guns. It will work fine with an airbrush though.

I do add some water to it. A mix anywhere from 1/3 to 1/4 water depending on how hot/cold- dry/humid the weather is. I’m in coastal southern California so I have to sometimes deal with cold wet rainy days, where nothing dries or extremely hot dry dessert like days, where the paint can dry to a powder before it hits what you’re painting. Most of the time though, the weather is pretty nice and good for painting.

Those are solvent based, aren’t they? Do they flash pretty quick?

I know most of the painters in Oz use automotive lacquers or enamels. Something we can’t do here in So Cal because of the air pollution laws. This is the first I’ve heard of silkscreen inks being used. From your photos, it looks like they work quite well.

I use Photobucket. I had the same problem with Sways 39kb limit until I figured out the image markup tags that link to an image on another server.

Now, if could only figure how to do that with videos, that would be cool…

I finished with an automotive 2 part clear coat. Weighs right at 6 lbs. without fins. Could have made it lighter, but went with a fairly heavy glass schedule that includes a 6 oz carbon/kevlar deck patch. I don’t know why you couldn’t use ResinX as the gloss coat, but haven’t heard of anyone doing it yet. I won’t know how it rides for a while, but I’ll post up when I do.

Hey Atomized:

I’m not a big time sprayer but I’m trying out your

black pin recommendation on an experimental lb shape

just for the heck of it. I want to do a bit more spraying

in the future. Do you think that adding calcium carb. to

reds would help stop crystalization? I know that glassblowers/

potters calcium carb. is easy to get here and cheap. It

is ball milled so it is a fine powder and could be added if

the paint is strained well before use. Also, what do you

use as a sealer for your fades and when do you apply it?

I’m getting a bit of lift from my pinline tape even tho I sprayed

the fade onto white. Thanks!

Yes. There was a thread back in November about crystalization that has my take on it.

You can use a heat gun to soften the adhesive of tape so it doesn’t pull up the paint. Be careful though, don’t hold it in one area for too long or you will burn the foam.

I use acrylic matte medium as clear. Shoot it first to kill any static charge that maybe on the blank and fade your color out into it. There’s a lot of people here on sways that use Future floor shine as a clear-that may also work.

i didnt want to say anything but if i started posting pics of resin work on a epoxy airbrush thread how would that go over?

just a thought you dont have to agree with.

darkside for life!

not a prob Darth, the start was yours in the first,

I just thought there should be a question or two thrown

in here as well as some answers instead of a lot of

bragging…

I’ve yet to see a good purple tint/opaque deck to

yellow foamie/tint bottom!!! My fave color combo from

the 60’s… LOL

Pics available at a nominal charge…

now your on the dark side

Wow!

Just to keep me honest on the thread:

Big Red: airbrush on clark foam

Big Blue: yellow airbrush on clark, blue opaque

panels (not quite a tint)

Sweet tart: Purple tint/opaque on bennett

(didn’t look this way in the bucket LOL)

Hope this squares it with you Darth…

I think it would go over great. We all can contribute. I believe that’s the essence of Sways- the sharing of information of the art and science of surfboard building. All the pictures of your work and Obi’s really inspire that essence. I wish some of the folks at Oceanworks in OC would post some pics of the beautiful epoxy swirl lay-ups they do on the Infinitys. I’m sure you would be impressed.

I’m sorry that some members keep asking me about spray techniques. I’m just being helpful by sharing what I know. All I really want show are the swirls on foam I’ve been doing.

Anyway, Keep up the great work!! and please post more pic’s.

Your work is phenomenal!!

Sorry Darth & Atomized

here they are:

I wonder if you arn’t refering to Ray’s work over

at Clearwater? He is one of the unsung heros

of the glassing crew. Look at a few of the

Infinity SUP’s & some of the Gato’s. (re: Creme)

goood work yeah…

You’re probably right. I was at the Infinity shop in DP last summer and was blow away by the resin color work on the Epoxy SUPs. I asked the sales guy there about who does their glassing. I’m going from memory- I though he said Oceanworks.

I went over there after the SUPs arrived and

noticed that Ray forgot to lam out the Clearwater

logo on them. I know Steve was stoked at the

quality of the epoxy work… there are none so

true as those that are un-named…

I wish I had some pics.

From the Infinity Web Site:

Nice!!

Here’s a picture of me on my epoxy SUP…
