Hi Woody
RR Epoxy has an accelerator called X-55 that speeds up the cure time. I am sure that other companies might have similar additives.
When Darthvader first mentioned his tips I started thinking about the possibilities.
Hi Darth.
When you were saying about the speeded up gel time with cobalt, was it to stop/limit muddying? Or bleeding of the colors? …both?
I am wondering, because I have followed the idea of ‘first color to hit the cloth wins’, and so for better swirls and seperation I simply used more resin, so that more of the board is covered before the resin gets pulled around. Hence the reduction in muddying.(keep in mind that I am using epoxy)
By using more resin (almost double what I would use on a straight lam) I have gotten better definition, on the last one that I did. There was still some muddying, and when you look closely at the swirls, you can see that the color ‘lines’ slightly bleed into one another. I have been thinking about it since I read your posts; I had figured that it was simply due to the viscosity of the epoxy; but maybe it is also the longer cure time.
So, to recap. More resin/less moving resin around, equals less muddying and faster cure time equals better color seperation AND less muddying?
Anyway, thanks for all of the insights. I have only done 4 swirls so far, but they have been getting better each time. More to look forward to.
havent posted in a while… here you go.
another one by Obie Wan.
im pretty sure purple and yellow make Brown…
a quick little history lesson of where i came from
these three boards where glassed by the late dave “hig” higley, aka yoda. he was my roommate at the time and passed to me many ways of the “force” when it come to building boards. hes untimely death hit me hard and much was lost with him leaving.
in this photos its 2004. obie wan showing of the hand tape skills…notice a young skywalker in the top left corner.
after a year or so of doing clears i was shown the way of the “force”. im pretty sure this is one of the first abstract swirls i ever through down.

another one of my very first abstracts
all in all i was lucky to have such great teachers.
Vadar, real nice to here a bit more about your back history, always hard to lose a friend/mentor.
The purple, green, yellow board blows my mind, I’m counting 6 separate colours, no mud no bleeding, looks like all the colours were poured with a yellow base over the top, no way I could do that without a mud bath, maybe on a deck patch but I’d have to let the small pours kick before doing the base, I think the rails would be out of the question,
I see how the cobalt works now. Your power is great, does the dark side have a good pension scheme?
As for as I’m aware the X-55 accelerator isn’t available here yet but that just occurred to me too, so I’ll ask around and give it a try. Not sure it would work in the same way as cobalt but maybe you could add it once all colours are mixed to give more time to mix things up.
Check it out.

Your Dojo is putting out some beautiful work. Sorry for the lame joke, it wouldn’t stay bottled up.
Here’s my first one.
I did not have much control and everything was kind of random.
Word of advise…when kicking off all the little cups of resin don’t be distracted. On this particular job I kicked off one cup with 2 doses of MEPK which ment there was one cup that didn’t get any!
Somehow it all worked out but it could have been a bad situation. I was lucky my laps did not kick off before being wrapped.
O, one last thing…if you don’t understand what I am talking about above…please do some more research and preperation. It’s all in the preperation!
O…here’s the deck. You can see some tiger stripes on the rail laps.
Another good practice to start getting into when doing a color job in the lam it to have some extra gear laying around.
A few times in the past I have spent too much time playing with the colors and needed my wifes help to find dry spots, bubbles, or help pull excess resin off the rails after they are wrapped.
If you keep a spare respirator, gloves and a squeegee around it will make thoes times much easier when your resin starts to gel and you are screaming bloody murder from the shack for some help.
Also color jobs can get messy and your squeegee can become slippery with excess resin. Double up on the disposable gloves if you are a beginner (like me). You can shed a pair when your gloves become too mucked up.
A spare squeggee is also a good idea to have ready.
Preparation!!!
dane,
I agree with you 100% on having extra squeegees at hand. Some say to have a few scrap swatches of fiberglass to wipe down. Avoid the fiber ball bunnies and just grap a clean fresh one. I’ll run mine under hot water to soften em up prior to glassing, allowing time to dry of course. Lots of amazing tints and patterns here. Great thread, great pics.
Here is the latest to emerge from the Blueroom In Michigan. A fresh water fish, EPS/ epoxy . Burgundy, red swirl, opaque beige.
peace out everyone,
scott
Some resin opaques, resin work, and patterns.

Great to see so many contributors on this thread! Keep up the good work guys! Cheers Jim
Tipping our hat to VADAR. We love you!!! However, your use of Star Wars brings out such an intensely hidden nerdy side that I have personally never experienced from you before. Acid splash and pin lines are out…HAHAHA. This is pain in your ass VADAR. SEE YOU SOON.
Wow Troy, Austin sure knows how to make the COLORS flow. Mahalo,Larry
funny you should mention the boards…you want some pics?
yah im the kid with the star wars toys still in the box and a original optimus Prime. the star wars talk has many hidden metaphors. its either that or KUng FU or cowboys and indians,
bye the way the colors yoou guys picked the the cloth dips POP.
Man I’m stoked on this thread. One of the best in years.
My wife says some of Darth’s boards remind her of my taste in shirts LOL- this one being a prime example.
I know it might be a breach of ettiquette , but if I can’t ask here I can’t ask anywhere-
Can someone give a few clues how this is done ?
damn, feraldave… uhh, whats the deal with them being all EXACTLY the same, just different colors.?..thats impossible with auctual resin color work.
photoshop or what?..
i like alot of your old sprays i was really hooked with the one with the chick holding the martini glass untill one day i was looking at the booklet for that video game, "grand theft auto"saw the same pic minus the beverage… cool spray anyway…been thinking of having some plotter made stencils myself latley.you inspired this one auctually…but this was one i drew up on cardboard and cutout…
but, yeah darth vader that one there with the dark blues is pretty cool, been thinking of doing something like that myself latley… but i do so many blue boards, blue swils just look cool though darker the better i think…
was trying to find the bottom pic of that light blue LB pic i posted a few pages back… bottom crisp dark blue, white , black… i dont have it in digitial though, yes i have a scanner but real pics at the shop and scanners at home …
ok carry on with it…
