Show us your resin tints and patterns!

Hey Ken, found the right info in old threads. Searched further and found the blog of hess Surfboards. There I found what I was looking for. Some nice pics of wooden boards with a resintint. So feel free to post them here so that every sort of a resin tint is present in this fabulous thread.

Okay this thread has got me in over my head a few times. In fact I first started scrolling thought it before I did my second ever board in March of '08 and every board since I have done with pigment/tint. Here are some of my garage hack jobs.

This is that second board. I just mixed three different pots and poured them at the same time. It was a great lesson in how the glass sucks up the color

This one is my girlfriends mini longboard. She wanted a “mexican blanket” band. I let the colors overlap a bit but it sort of gave a different abstract look to it. She was happy.

This was a board I did for a classmate of my girlfriend. The picture of it standing up is before I sanded the hot-coat so the colors are lost in the glare from the sun on the wax. I did not get a pic after gloss and polish.

Here is a close up of the swirls during the lam. Never mind my ugly mug in the picture (or lack of respirator).

This is my “every day” board. The deck came out okay but the bottom drained pretty bad. Plus I used glass that was folded and bagged that gave me troubles. Won’t do that again.

Nice one’s Kookifornia. Especially the red one.Did you use clear red and a bit of black and white? This is the colorcombo I’m looking for on the balsa board.

Thanks! No that was a heavy dose of red pigment. It would have covered up any wood grain. I actually mixed pots of black, white, pink, purple and the main red then drizzled the other colors into the red and gave one quick circle with the mixing stick. I really like your idea of red tint over wood. It would give it that transparent stain look.

ravenna, if you want to be able to see the wood you have to use red trans, not pigment.  use a pretty good amount of it though because it is rather weak.  you could use the whole can and you wont get it opaque.  you can use pigment with epoxy but use very little and do a test piece on some scrap wood before you start laming to make sure its not too dark.  when laming wood boards with tinted epoxy i always pour a cheater coat first, this will insure that the tint stays even over the wood

A little 5'4" thruster I'm working on for my kids.  Akrylic on foam.

I'm using a foam roller to apply the colors and a 3" foam brush to apply the pinlines.  Just dabbing it on very lightly and letting the foam suck the paint off the brush.  I've done a few boards this way and for me I like it better than trying to do traditional pinlines.  If I try to do regular pinlines I always wind up not being happy with the results.  Doing them this way works great for me.

not polished

Did this one yesterday afternoon.  Was having so much fun doing the "Jackson Pollock" thing with the black, maybe I overdid it?

Paul, very nice. Not polished?  Sure looks glossy to me.  Is that the board on which you did the video butt crack demo?

Paul that fish is NICE!

the board is the brother of the buttcrack video. i gotta go a bit cleaner on the other one and only use a few colours. this one, the guy said to go to town. he wanted a hard out acid trip. cheers for compliments.

Hey ken, do you know how hard it is to get photos of yourself when its cranking. Also the lads get a bit snarky when i post photos of spots. . I have a shot of mate riding his compsand that day tho.

I hope to get some shots of me riding these boards as they are the best 2 boards i have made for myself . Both magic in there own way. The poly is outstanding on late drops and smooth deep carves. the ixps is twitchy but can surely blow the back out of a 4 ft wave. over 5ft and i would grab the poly no question. any big guys out there 21 and a half is NOT too wide. both boards are 6 3 same hight as me, and both work to doh

just to prove i surf lol

on the end of one. rare photo wife took a couple months back( hope i havent already posted this pic)

Wow.  I didn’t know there were waves that good at that spot!!   See you there tomorrow.  Or maybe pick me up and we’ll go together.
