i think green paint tint i used has cobalt in it. it kicks real fast for some reason
Paul, I don’t know what it is about your orange green swirls but they make me want to go eat some candy. Sweet.
Do you mix all the colors in one bucket or are you pouring them from separate buckets?
ahh i learned another lesson jeff. i seem to get more detail in swirls if i mix into cups and then pour the colours into an icecream container and then pour that… i think the more resin you use the better the swirl and less mud.i used 1.5 liters on this deck and the rails are muddy on deck side with two layers of glass. i could have got more colour definition on the rail by pouring another 500 grams of swirl down the rails. two layers of glass is more difficult and requires you to not pull resin around to much or you get the mud. seems the green kicks real fast even at under 1% cat
thin pours of (into a bucket)strong white will bring definition to swirls
if i was getting better money i would probably use more resin to get an acid candy look
i was using far less resin and pulling out clockwise for a more defined rail. then i switched to all vertical pulls but they seem to be better in the center but more muddy rail
but now i will use a strong base colour out toward the rail with light highlight that way the mud from centre vertical pull will not effect rail colour to much. hope that makes sense
there are plenty of ways to do it eh im sure
having 4 or 5 clean squeegees would be a good start
Try tilting and tipping the board to get the resin to flow out without pushing it with the squeegee. To minimize resin use, I also pour out in puddles scattered around the board, including puddles along the rail that run off onto the lap. The puddles are poured out in small circles, figure eights, criss-cross patterns, etc, to get a mixedup look ontop of the swirl. Otherwise, you get a drizzle look. Pour in slow, thin streams. You can also hold the lap out with the free hand and pour right onto the lap, then let go and let it hang down.

So stoked to finally get some swirl going. Looking at all the insane tints here has really inspired me to the challenge
of working with pigment and not so much paint any more. Thanks for this thread guys,... and keep inspiring.
Long way to go to get mine looking as good as others.
i accidently posted this in the unused bit similarly named thread as this, whoops!
this is a 6’x22"x3" maroon tinted fish.
first real fish that I have done. I wanted to do glass ins, but the
customer wanted plugs - up to them I guess. I’m pretty happy with it,
just wish that I could get my polishes and pin lining a bit better - but
I’m slowly getting there. forgot to take a pic of the deck, but it’s
just the same colours as the bottom really.

Oh,... and uhhhh,.... before I forget,... can I get a few tips on how to get a clean cut lap if I have waited a bit to long to flip the board and then I am struglin like hell to pull my razor along my,... practically,.. hidden tape line. I got no problem with my tape skills,... its pullin that razor through two 4oz layers of kicked glass along that line,.. that i cant hardley see. Check out my,.."tom curren stripe" pin line to cover my hack saw cut job on the lap in my photo two reply up. Did it again last night on a lap cut. Arrrggg!!! Would sure like to put a real PIN line,... or even leave the cut line,... like some of the super nice ones i have seen here.
Help.
Whoa - that’s awesome! How many different colors did you have pre-mixed? Looks like 10 or more. Good luck getting the resin off the concrete. Try a hammer after it hardens, and wear goggles! It works, but it’s like a little grenade blasting everytime with resin shrapnel flying everywhere. :-)
When doing cutlaps if the glass has kicked fold the tape over and make cuts along the curve you can then cut along the fold horizontally. When I do no pins on a tinted board I never do double layers of glass. I tint the bottom then the top then do a clear top. I got that set up from austin and haven’t looked back since. it comes out really clean. Also scrape the lap line real good excess resin will make a hard lap to cut. Also if you can’t find the tape line use a flash light under the board and you can see it fine or tripple layer your tape on the cutlap and you can feel it.
Bottom lam done on 5’7" keel fish. Mexican Blanket!! Got a little muddy in some areas, but overall I’m super stoked.

Thanks for the tips. Def learned something about trying to trim two layers of 4 oz at the tape. The same thing happened to me on the deck inlay tint job,...that butts up to the bottom lay up cut line on the deck rails,.. and that was with one layer of 4 oz. My fix on that one after trying like hell to pull a razor through it,... was to dab on a light Hot coat over excess lam on top of the tape,... lay platic wrap on the sand n rack, grabed the board with two sandwhich baggies on me hands,... and feathered down around the whole tape job with 60 grit on a hard pad. all the tape came right up nice,... with only a little razor scrapin here and there. Plus! My 6 oz clear lay up on top of that,.. layed over nice and smooth at the lap cut. No bump. Still gona have to do a pin over the cut line,.but not as wide as my last one. will post pics when she done.
This was my first resin swirl.
I was so excited about it that I couldn’t sleep last night and ended up going to my shop at 5:30 in the morning. haha I did it with RR’s Kwik Kick Epoxy, which by the way is amazing to work with. It’s all I want to use now. I can’t wait to hotcoat with it, I’ve heard great things and so far they all are true!
I definitely learned a lot from this first attempt, but I am pretty happy with the way it came out too. I should have let that bit by the nose run all the way off the board instead of catching it like I did. But, now I know how it all works.
Can’t want to do another!
