Yeah, love that look! Surfore said "Ice Olive tint on EPS done by Jim Phillips...comp bands and pins by Sam Cody" - and I have checked foam e-z and greenllight, and cannot find "Ice Olive tint". Is it something someone custom blended, or is it commercially available?
huckleberry you have to mix these cool colors yourself…for the one in question…start with a small amount of white, then add a drop of blue and two drops of green that should bring you very close the that color…and always mix your pigment first then add it too the resin!!!

Board No. 2. Attempted a blue bottom+rails with cutlaps, but the blue soaked through the masking tape and my laps were horrendous. Tried to patch it up but in the end just went all blue in the hotcoat.

Did some pinlines then gloss. Lost pics post sand and polish

Board #5. 5’10’’ blob. Red all over. White pinstripes on hotcoat. Time well spent masking those lines in front of the telly.

Pic taken just before first wax up. Not quite the same effect with wax but still love surfing it!
Very simple “resin tints and patterns” but am slowly working up. half way through glassing #6 and cutlaps much better this time! haha
Now to the main purpose of my post:
as i make #6, my cousin is making #1. both 9’2’’ longboards. he wants to replicate this fine glassing work:

Problem… purple.
I tried mixing up some purple from my blue and red pigments but everything i tried came out more grey/brown than anything else. Even with lots of white as a base, i acheived something purplish, but it was really dull. Can anyone give some quick tips on mixing up colours, or point me in the direction of any threads on the subject…?
Or can any Sydneysiders suggest places with a nice range of pigments, or that does custom colours. I buy most of my stuff from Dion’s in Brookvale, including the pigments, but didn’t ask them about mixing up colours. FGI perhaps? Or any paint shops?
Cheers. And have been working my way slowly through this thread over the last few days. Always in awe!! (already planning my mexican blanket for my lil’ cousins board
dwylanm, try adding just a touch of yellow to brighten up your purple…
Mixing blue and magenta will get you a nice purple.
Adding yellow to purple doesn’t brighten it.

9'1" Pintail tangerine deck, abstract bottom, no need for pinlines
just need to gloss it.
Dwylamn, you probably aren’t using the correct temperature of red/blue to mix your purple. I don’t know about resin tints so I can’t speak to the specifics of what you need, but with paint it’s the reflection/transmission of multiple colors that allow them to be mixed. All reds actually reflect orange, red and purple. All blues reflect green, blue and purple. When you mix red and blue the only color that they mutually reflect/transmit is purple and that’s why mixing red and blue paint will give you purple. The problem you’re experiencing is because even the “primaries” aren’t truly primary. They all favor one side or the other of their adjacent colors. For instance, cadmium red reflects a lot more orange and pthalo blue reflects a lot more green so when you mix those two and try to get purple you are introducing a lot of complimentary color and that will always lead you towards gray/brown. If you want to mix a rich purple you’ll be much better off with a quinacridone crimson and ultramarine blue as each of them favors purple in it’s base pigment. Which brings me to another point. Again I can’t speak to specific resin tints, but with paint you always want to use pure pigments if you’re planning on mixing colors. If you use “cadmium red hue” paint instead of “cadmium red” you will not be able to mix colors that are as rich or brilliant with the “cadmium red hue”. The reason is that the hue is already a mix of cheaper pigments that imitates the color of a true cadmium red and the more pigments you mix the harder it is to keep from introducing complimentary colors. So look for tints with only one pigment in them. If possible, look for red tints with pigments that contain quinacridone or anthraquinone and stay away from any cadmium pigments. Look for blue tints that contain pigments with sulfer/sulfide and/or sodium and stay away from phthalocyanine and copper. If you can find tints with pure dioxazine pigment, that is a brilliant purple that also mixes well. Good luck!
Cheers guys!! Lots of good stuff there dustymoon. I’ll head down to a couple of places today to try and find some better colours… Or i might just try and find some purple. But all info will be bookmarked for future mixing
cheers.
My latest.
Orange tint. Acrylic bronze pinline. Zebrawood tailbloack.
Came our pretty good. First board I completed in about three years due to an inadvertent case of home remodeling. The picture in the board is from a cruise-liner that beached itself in the 30’s in the are where I live.

Sorry for the crappy pics!
hiya Gill !!
thanks for the resin work shots , good on ya mate !
It's always good to see you here , and that you've been making boards ....
what are the fins on them ?
cheers !

Been making boards … Chip I’ve been flat out for the past two years! This is the first chance I’ve had to make ME some boards fro a long time. Fins on the pink board are SQ7 quads from Shapers Australia (hexalite) cores, the fins on the fish are recycled timber (complete with nail holes) with a chckerboard inlay running down the middle. Will take some pics for you.
