…?
Im gonna love following this. I never really had the time but always dream, one day when I stop travelling im gonna give it a shot again. Really looking forward to seeing what is done…
i’m in. got a 5’0 blank thats been sitting in the rack for a year and a half now! good opportunity to get it shaped!
I would like to participate as well.
I do some t-shirt design for our little shop up here and would be happy to donate a tshirt to the winner. But we need to state some time guidelines as I will get too busy to follow up come May.
i’ll throw in a tail pad for best aussie! (or anyone is shipping is reasonably priced)
I’m thinking Franken board…I’ll do the $3 longboard
It’d be nice to firm up the dates and requirements for a successful entry and kick off this Challenge.
Mods, would there be a way to make one sticky thread that has the ‘rules’ and then has links to each build thread?
My thoughts on the particulars below:
Dates: start now, end May 15th 2015.
Build thread to contain proof of start, proof of process, proof of buoyancy.
Proof of start: Pic of partially completed board w/ newpaper front page, dated within contest period, clearly readable
Proof of process: Build thread with pics and thoughts from builder
Proof of buoyancy: Pic of board in water (ocean, lake, river, pond, tank, city fountain, or pool)
Voting: A general vote by Sway’s members (poll or +/- keys) and a contestant-only vote (tallied PM’s)
Awards: as donated
I’d like to offer to silkscreen ‘contestant’ shirts for those who complete the Challenge. One of Sway’s own (not me) has offered to do the artwork. I’d cover the setup, print, and ship the shirts. I would ask that contestants cover the shipping and maybe a buck or two towards the actual shirt.

Too many rules takes the fun out of a thing I say. Proof of buoyancy? What? Mike
This is perfect swaylocks… Q: How many swaylockians does it take to change a light bulb, A: 10,000, 1 to screw in the bulb and 9,999 to certificate the boyancy, discuss fister valves, ball bearings, 30 wt motor oil, and the fluid dynamic properties of a pipeline barrel seen in a movie from 1978…from a mobile home in Kanasas, and design a special logo with clowns and snakes.
Let the build begin. Start now, ends is 3 months or so?
Silly me thinking this might be a fun and worthwhile way to get some builds going. Never mind.
Dag nabbit, I thought I had the holeshot on this thing but maybe I jumped the gate?
My first build thread, with pictures even. Hasn’t gotten any comments. Fallen off the first page.I’m feeling a little neglected over here.(No love for the Florida panhandle…)
I got’s no proof but I swear it was 2 hunks of foam, a stick, and a bottle of glue last Saturday morning.
Put on your big girl panties and get your build threads going… Let the nitpickers pick their nits… Ignore them… Build a board and we will all vote… Huck already layed out the dates…
KEEP IT SIMPLE STUPID
My build thread will be going up as soon as I start the build.
I can’t participate in a build, but I’ll offer up a custom painted and pinstiped handplane for an award, and cover the shipping to whomever wins it. Just give me a little guidline of what it should say (i.e. “1st place 2015 Board build” or “Best Color” etc.)
So it is from March 20 to June 21st?..Any of you posers have a problem with that?
Mako, can I get you a tissue? or some cheese with that whine?
All in favor say “I”
I am just finishing up a board that would be a shoe in for the train wreck/ high technology category
The deck is reinforced with moth legs/wings/guts, china brush bristles.
The stringer is fence material from city mill, that wasn’t planed, so I could maintain a curved stringer, with knots, which will provide drive, and a special break away feature, in case I take a hard fall, the board will split in half to absorb the shock.
If I started to early for that board, I can definitely screw up another board by June
This is rich. The arguing, complaining, respectfully disagreeing, and friendly suggestion-ing are almost as much fun as the board building. And we’ve barely even touched on the nitpicking and knicker twisting! Man!
Here’s a friendly unsolicited suggestion: This could be a classic Swaylocks tradition every quarter, 4 times a year.
And here’s another: I say flood this thread with build photos, if you got 'em post 'em up in this thread, that’ll keep it at the top of the page and turn it into complete chaos of the higest order.
Thanks Mako for a Swaylocks flash of brilliance, up there in a not so close second place to Greg Tate’s hotseat.
Cowabunga!
Just my humble ramblings.
But it seems to me the ground rules have been established.
And as in golf (a game of honor) I am calling this out on myself.
Ha!!!

“Any thoughts about having a friendly forum board building contest this spring. I often visit a guitar building forum and every year they do a contest. Simple ground rules. Build thread. Proof of the start date. Well documented build. Pictures of the final product. Voted on by members. Simple meaningless prize like a t-shirt or something. Perhaps April 1st to May 15th.”
Crisp
“Alright guys…how about everybody start their own build thread.
Make sure to put “SBC” in the title.”
Huck
“Looking it up, spring runs march 20 to June 21, so I suggest start anytime, but all boards submitted have to be done by June 21. Looking forward to some Swaylocks SBC 2015 build threads!”
Melikefish
“Do we start now?
What do you guys think about having several awards?
Best Overall Shape: Everything from first step to finish was done remarkably
Best Technically Advanced: Fancy materials/tehcniques
Best FrankenBoard: Came out good, but glued a hodge-podge of crap found laying around
Best Trainwreck:it floats”

“Dag nabbit, I thought I had the holeshot on this thing but maybe I jumped the gate? ”
LMAO!
**Jumped the gate? Buddy I was three turns in before they flagged me down!** **Oh well I’ll practice on this one, didn’t like the tail rocker anyway.** **Oh, and this WAS my KISS.** **Just hate being “black flagged”** **Brothers keep the STOKE!**In order to bump to the top.
Nose from the left template, tail from the right.
I cut my thickness to size and rough out my concaves and V before cutting my outline so it may change a tad but in order to call my shot I thought id lay it out for a pic.
Slight single to double all the way through with v out the back.
6’8 - 21.5 - 2.625
Down rails - Single fin.

* A SURFABLE version of one of these , perhaps , Bazza ? [ but … in reality … I’m guessing that NO-ONE will be getting THAT creative … ]
